This week on a particularly action-heavy “Supergirl,” M’gann’s White Martian husband arrives and impersonates someone inside the DEO, forcing the building into lockdown as Supergirl and company try to figure out who is really who they appear to be.
“The Martian Chronicles” had a much more epic title than this episode deserved. Despite delivering a ton of action and Kara’s “Power to the girls” sweater, most of this episode was fairly cliched. You could call pretty much every plot, from Kara being upset that Alex misses her “Earth birthday” to go to a Barenaked Ladies concert with Maggie, to J’onn finally admitting that he has feelings for M’gann only for her to leave.
M’gann’s departure was quite sudden and murkily defined. She wants to help White Martians who don’t agree with the regime, but will most likely die in the process. Such a dramatic decision really came right the heck out of nowhere and, while it will hopefully carry over to future episodes, currently stands as an excuse to make our heroes miserable.
Same goes for Kara and Mon-El, who ended the episode on the world’s most overused romance trope. If you’re sick of shows that have a girl decide to ask a guy out, only to see him with another woman, tough luck, cause that’s what we get.
The one bright side of the episode was that Jeremy Jordan and Chyler Leigh got to be nasty villains for a far too brief time. The final fight between Supergirl and Alex’s doppelgänger harkened back to season 1’s finale in a fun way.
“The Martian Chronicles” was the first underwhelming episode “Supergirl” has given us in a long time. That may be good that we’ve gone a long stretch to get to this point, but this episode left a lot to be desired.
