“Supergirl” Episode Review: Third Time’s the Charm

Despite resurrecting a much too overused villain and leaning towards characters who have been underutilized this season, “We Can Be Heroes” proved to be a highlight of “Supergirl’s” phenomenal second season.

J’onn faces a difficult decision when Megan falls into a coma, Kara trains Mon-El to become a full time superhero and Livewire escapes from prison, forcing Supergirl to go after her.

Seeing as Alex’s coming out of the closet has dominated the last few episodes, it was a refreshing change of pace for this week to focus on James and J’onn with equally meaty storylines. Starting with James, Kara finally discovered his identity as Guardian and was understandably not too pleased. It not only creates a rift between the pair, but adds new drama for the next few episodes as now Kara is in on Guardian’s actions, yet doesn’t approve.

J’onn finally forgave Megan when her life was in danger by a vague threat from White Martians who will be the villains from here on in, it seems. This led to perhaps one of the best executed scenes in “Supergirl” history as J’onn entered Megan’s mind and saved her from reliving her dark decision on Mars. The music, the acting and the convincing effects all came together for a killer scene that was quite emotional and impactful.

Mon-El also revealed that he has feelings for Kara and in a surprising twist, seemed resigned to the idea that they can’t be together and left Kara in her apartment, ending the episode on a somber note. It needs to be said that the writers deserve credit for resisting the urge to take them all the way right then and there. The pain of knowing someone you like doesn’t feel the same way is obviously no stranger to this show- think Winn in season 1- but something you rarely see on superhero shows.

“We Can Be Heroes” was stellar on all fronts. Great action, great drama, great character, great comedy. It’s not quite up to “For the Girl Who Has Everything” standards, but it’s knocking on the door.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays on The CW.
