“Supergirl” Episode Review: Trouble Ye Shall Find

“Supergirl” returns with the Kevin Smith-helmed “Supergirl Lives” in which Mon-El helps Kara investigate a missing persons case, which sends them to an alien planet with a red sun, depriving them of their powers. Winn has a near death experience while Alex is worried her happiness with Maggie won’t last.

Though “Supergirl Lives” didn’t really plug the season’s plot train along, it managed to be a fun ride from beginning to end. This week had some really creative moments, such as Alex using a sun grenade- that’s just cool to say!- to help Supergirl kick some ass on an alien planet.

This was also a pretty character packed episode for one that was mostly action. Kara, despite overwhelming odds against her, stood defiantly against the alien slavers, inspiring the kidnapped humans to take a stand with her. Moments where the hero is seemingly outmatched, but goes for it anyway are always fun and it played into Mon-El’s choosing to become a superhero in the end.

Elsewhere, Alex and Maggie hit a snag after some sweet scenes of the pair the morning after… you know. It lead to not just the plot reveal that Maggie knows Supergirl’s true identity, but a great moment for Alex as she realized that she does deserve to be happy outside of her duties, something she’s been mulling over for a while.

Even Winn got some great character stuff this week, as he at first quit on James’s Guardian persona after nearly getting shot. It gave Jeremy Jordan a great moment when he confronted James… only for him to get a confidence boost after kicking an alien guard’s butt.

“Supergirl Lives” was a blast of an episode, proving what makes this show so fun in the first place. Juggling action, character and a great message to boot, it’s a great start to the new year.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays on The CW.
