In “Supergirl’s” fantastic mid-season finale, “Medusa,” Cadmus gets their hands on a Kryptonian virus that can wipe out aliens in National City. J’onn struggles with his transformation into a White Martian, Alex plans to come out to her mother, and Lena confronts her own mother about her true intentions.
What started out as an innocent Thanksgiving episode turned into one of “Supergirl’s” best hours, which is truly saying something. This episode tied up many loose ends and also gave a small glimpse of the future of the season, all while delivering action, drama and comedy.
First up, Lena Luthor had to come to terms with her mother’s villainy and after a tense confrontation with Supergirl, seemed to hand over the one piece Lillian needed to weaponize Medusa. At first, this was a truly shocking development, seeing how Lena’s behavior in the previous episodes suggested that she was a true force for good. But of course, she pulled a switch on her mother and turned her over to the authorities, which was a fun reversal.
Speaking of mothers, Alex came out to Eliza, who took it amazingly well, in a fun reversal of last season’s Thanksgiving confession. This, in turn, led to Alex and Maggie FINALLY hooking up in the end, after some good moments of the two of them seemingly agreeing to be friends only for Maggie to show up at Alex’s doorstep after a near death experience.
J’onn also continued his transformation into a White Martian, which although downplayed from last week, seemed to lead into a heroic sacrifice on his part. But surprise! Eliza manages to save him from that fate after reverse engineering a cure from Medusa. Well, that was unexpectedly easy and seemed to wrap up too quickly, but hey, I like a happy ending.
And yes, The Flash showed up in the stinger teasing the big four show crossover. But it honestly felt like an afterthought and the portals throughout the episode fairly obviously hinted at this. Personally, I’m more concerned that Kara had to kill Kalex: That was cold.
“Medusa” was a phenomenal episode, ending the year on a high note, while also building up to the “Heroes vs. Aliens” crossover, albeit very quickly. Tune in next year for more “Supergirl”!
