Continuing the trend of fantastic season 2 episodes of The CW’s Supergirl, “Crossfire” pitted Supergirl against a Cadmus funded gang, inspiring James to take a drastic stand against them. Kara tries to integrate Mon-El into society, while Alex tried to cheer up Maggie after a breakup.
After having sat out about three episodes this season thanks to the absurd decision to break up his relationship with Kara, James Olson finally took center stage this season, becoming a vigilante. Though this subplot has its far share of holes- it’s unreasonable to assume the DEO wouldn’t find out about James sooner- it does give James a major motivator this season and to be fair, his rationale for suiting up was a good one. Plus, his teaming up with Winn should give the pair an interesting new dynamic.
And speaking of dynamics… Yes, Alex likes Maggie. It was a good move on the writers’ part to not take the pair all the way this soon, seeing as it gives them a place to go forward from here, and it also focused the episode on Alex officially coming to terms with her sexuality. And it makes sense: Alex has never had great luck with guys and her whole life has been devoted to the DEO. Of course she’s ignored her true feelings.
The whole angle of Kara trying to teach Mon-El how to function as a human went nowhere aside from some great comedy, notably Kara’s priceless reaction to seeing Mon-El with James’s assistant. On that note, the writing in this episode was great with some good zingers, such as Kara unashamedly praising NSYNC.
Lena Luthor also took the reigns this week, secretly launching a gala to trap Cadmus’s gang. The angle that Lena isn’t standing by to let her legacy control her future not only works alongside James’s story, but fuels the reveal that Cadmus is funded by Lena’s mother and hints that the two are working opposite sides, which should pay off down the line.
“Crossfire” was yet another fantastic episode. The action, the character development, the comedy, the drama; it all came together this week.
