“Supergirl” Episode Review: Get Your Fight On

In the Supergirl episode “Survivors,” Maggie tips off Alex and Supergirl to an underground alien fight club being run by the mysterious Roulette. J’onn tries to connect with Megan, the last surviving Martian, while Winn bonds with Mon-El.

With all these new characters coming into “Supergirl,” there’s a ton of fun new character dynamics to play around with. This episode gave us a ton of interactions between the established cast and the new players, notably Alex and Maggie, who team up yet again much to Supergirl’s surprise. Clearly, there’s something building between the two- there are already fan camps shipping the pair- and frankly, if the writers aren’t planning on getting them together, it would be a waste of a cool, progressive character like Maggie.

The whole subplot with Megan AKA Miss Martian served to give J’onn a new dimension. We’re used to seeing him as a no-nonsense duty comes first bureaucrat, so giving him a meaningful relationship is a fun reversal. Adding further dimension to that is the reveal that Megan is not a Green Martian, but a White one: The same kind responsible for wiping out J’onn’s race. Good God, that’s a lot of twists to keep track of!

Roulette, played by “Agents of SHIELD” villain Dichen Lachman, was more of a showgirl, but her release at the end hints that she’s part of a grander scheme. Someone’s clearly backing her antics- Lena Luthor?- but aside from that, she didn’t leave that big of an impression other than an ill conceived Michael Vick stab.

And Kara bonded more with Mon-El, who got a lot to do this week as he and Winn hit the town. Now, Mon is starting to make an impact and the fact that Kara is now watching out for him should give us good stuff.

“Survivors” was another solid episode with one or two missteps- James once again got the shaft- but the season is still looking golden. Building up character dynamics is what every great show should do best, and “Supergirl” is certainly getting that done right.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays on The CW.
