“Supergirl” Episode Review: Judge, Jury and Executioner
The Supergirl episode “Truth, Justice and the American Way” pitted Kara against the Master Jailer, an alien prison guard who is hunting down escaped prisoners. Grant hires a new assistant and James’s relationship with Lucy hits a snag, causing him to give Kara an ultimatum.
After the epic game changer of last week’s episode, this one was a more relaxed tone that didn’t really accomplish much for the show. It sets up a lot of plot lines that will no doubt impact the final six episodes of the season, notably James wanting to tell Lucy the truth about Supergirl, but this episode is clearly there to signal what’s to come, not to advance it.
The good news is that the Master Jailer was impressive, with some of the cooler fight scenes we’ve seen so far and a legitimately surprising twist of his true identity. His method of executing criminals dovetailed nicely with Kara’s dilemma of going too far to keep people safe, namely keeping Lord under illegal imprisonment. When she let him go, it seemed like the moral of the episode, but Alex negated it completely by threatening Lord with exposing his secrets if he told the world who Supergirl really is.
Then there was Siobhan, Grant’s new assistant. That’s about all to say, as she left virtually no impression on the episode. But then again, she could really be a super villain. One can hope.
Side Note: Nice Batman in-joke! “I thought masks were in that other city!”
“Truth, Justice and the American Way” was a mixed bag. It had cool action scenes and good moral discussions, but with only six episodes left in the season, it’s getting time to go big or go home.
Supergirl Season 2 premieres Monday, October 10, at 8pm on The CW.
