“Supergirl” Episode Review: May the Best Girl Win
In the “Bizarro” episode of Supergirl, Kara faces off against a clone of herself created by Maxwell Lord, while her relationship with Grant’s son Adam continues. Alex’s mistrust of Lord reaches a breaking point.
After 12 episodes, the Maxwell Lord subplot was finally (?) put to bed in a slightly underwhelming fashion. Lord’s grand plan to create Bizarro seemed flawed on the face of it- was he just waiting for Supergirl to show up to execute this plan?- and Bizarro herself was dealt with rather quickly.
It was tough to feel sympathy for Bizarro, despite the lengths the episode went to to get us to feel otherwise, because we got very little background on her. All we know is that she was comatose and Lord took her, which isn’t enough to elicit emotion. When Kara has to put her to sleep, it feels a little forced a sendoff for a one-dimensional villain of the week.
Speaking of sendoffs, Grant’s son Adam returned and left by episode’s end to very little fanfare. While it was obviously done to further a potential relationship between Kara and James, very strongly hinted at, the idea of a character coming in only to leave one episode later feels like a waste. Not only that, but Adam and Grant’s surprisingly underplayed concern after Kara was kidnapped by Bizarro was unintentionally funny, which is not a good sign.
“Bizarro” joins the thankfully very short list of underwhelming episodes. While it served a few story purposes, namely getting Lord out of the picture, it ultimately fell short of other, more productive episodes we’ve seen so far.
Supergirl Season 2 premieres Monday, October 10, at 8pm on The CW.
