“Supergirl” Episode Review: Bottle It Up

supergirl 1x10 childish things

On “Childish Things,” Alex and Henshaw execute a risky plan to find out what Lord is up to in Room 52, while Winn’s criminal father escapes from prison and tries to patch things up with his son.

This was just a great episode. This week really was Winn’s chance to shine, giving him not just a big role in the plot, but not one, but two emotional arcs as well, his feelings about his father and his fear of turning into him serving the story as well as fueling him finally confessing his true feelings for Kara. Jeremy Jordan deserves all the credit in the world for juggling these two conflicts and turning in a great performance on top of it. His final conversation with Kara was one of the more heartbreaking scenes the show has given us, if not THE most heartbreaking.

Speaking of darkness, Henshaw’s conflict about embracing his alien powers was front and center and while at first it seemed like unnecessary character trouble, it turned out to be legitimate as he accidentally erased a poor guard’s memories of his family. Too bad it was virtually forgotten by the end of the episode, although I’m sure it will haunt Henshaw further down the road.

And of course, Lord now knows that Supergirl is Alex’s sister, potentially spelling certain doom. It was also clever of the writers to turn a seemingly heartwarming moment into a shocking reveal, especially at the end of such a serious episode.

“Childish Things” is yet another addition to the great “Supergirl” episode lineup. While more serious than we’re used to seeing on this show, it payed off, proving that you don’t have to be heavy-handedly dark to deliver great drama.

Supergirl airs Mondays on The CW.
