Tonight’s episode of Freeform’s Siren was all kinds of crazy! “Curse of the Starving Class” saw the return of the mermaid sisters, their falling out, and a couple of big reveals. Here’s what went down in Bristol Cove.
THE HUNT | Last week’s episode saw the military facility set ablaze to erase all evidence of its existence and Aldon Decker (Ron Yuan) on the hunt for Chris (Chad Rook). In the opening moments of Thursday’s episode, Decker manages to track down the escaped fisherman all the way to Alaska. Luckily their meeting didn’t turn deadly as Chris was oblivious to the fact that the distressed nurse he ran away with was just that and not a dangerous sea creature with super healing DNA.
THE RETURN | A month has passed since Ryn and her sister swam off into oblivion, but thankfully we didn’t have to wait long for the pair to return. Just as Ben and Maddie were about to get it on, Ryn’s tracker alerted the two that they had come back to Bristol Cove. The mermaids have returned in search of food. *Side Note: Is it just me, or is Ryn ***kblocking Ben? The mermaid interrupted their shower last week, and now she’s come back in town just as the two were about to get nasty.*

THE BETRAYAL | Because Donna’s experience on land with humans was literally torture for her, it’s understandable that she’s wary of further interaction with them. Ryn, on the other hand, has come to trust Ben, Maddie and Helen and tries to assure her sister that not all humans are bad. Donna pleads with her sister to return with her to the water, but Ryn is dead set on staying behind with her human friends. After a quick fight that ends with Ben shining a flare in her face, Donna leaves, shunned by her sister.
THE TRUTH | Ben shows interest in the family business — and while going through his fathers emails, discovers that their business is working with Aldon Decker to completely strip the seabeds of food, forcing the mermaids to come to shore. Why? Decker has a master plan to capture even more mermaids, and seeing as we have yet to meet these two, it’s quite possible that he is successful in his plan.
THE REVEAL | Mermaid antiques shop owner Helen is not the town nut job she appears to be. There’s a reason why she has a vast knowledge of mermaids and why she has the perfect concoction to remedy mermaid’s damaged skin due to lack of water. The reason why she’s been the town’s only believer of mermaids? She’s one herself! “I’m one of you,” she reveals to Donna near the end of the episode.
It was a twist we saw coming even before the series premiered. The moment in last week’s episode, where Ryn discovers Helen had a similar skin condition, which Helen said was an auto-immune response, was a dead giveaway. Had that scene been cut from the episode, Helen’s reveal would have been much more surprising.
Now we turn it to you. What did you think of the episode? Did you suspect Helen’s big secret? Do you blame Donna for not wanting to trust humans? Is Chris off the hook for good? Let us know in the comments below!
