“Siren” Recap: Break Free

We know it’s still very early into the series, but we have to say it — the latest episode of Freeform’s Siren is our favorite episode so far. We got to learn more about why Ryn and her sister Donna came to the surface, and got to see a reunion that brought tears to our eyes. Here’s what happened in episode #104 “On the Road.”

BREAK FREE | Ryn’s sister (Sibongile Mlambo) has had enough being a lab rat for the military. When she finally reached her limit, she goes on the attack, killing anyone and everyone in her way. During her daring escape, she ends up killing Chris’ nurse, Donna Stevenson and leaving with her scrubs, ID and key card. While all the chaos goes down at the facility, Chris (Chad Rook) seizes the opportunity to finally flee — and on his way, runs into the mermaid.

At long last, the pair are rid of the horrible place that kept them captive for so long. On the road, Chris mistakens the mermaid for one of the facility’s nurses and upon reading the name on the ID she had on her, assumes her name is Donna — and that’s how she gets her name. The road trip continues as the severely injured fisherman helps Donna get to Libbey Beach.

STUBBORN | Ryn’s (Eline Powell) health is getting worse by the second and is first noticeable by Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) is interrupted by their new friend while taking a steamy shower. They insist she go back inside the water because her body is breaking down — skin deteriorating, wheezing heavily — but mermaid is determined to stay on land to help find her sister who she definitively knows is still very much alive.

When she finally agrees, to go back into the ocean, Ben and Maddie agree to put a tracking device on Ryn so they can always see where she is and know when and if she’s coming back.

They attach the tracker on Maddie’s moon necklace who Ryn had been admiring earlier. Initially, Maddie had disagreed with the idea of a tracker, feeling that Ryn is not a science experiment or one of their sea lions, but ultimately agrees only if the sea creature is okay with it.

HUNGRY | Helen (Rena Owen) discovers that the two sisters came to the surface that one fateful night because they were looking for food. “In the water, I go eat,” Ryn tells the antiques shop owner. “My sister, she follow me… me.” It is during this conversation that Helen learns that her new house guest was the reason for her sister’s capture. “It was your idea to come close to the surface,” Helen realizes. “You blame yourself for her getting caught.”

REUNION | After a failed attempt at showing Donna water from a fountain, he learns that she’s looking for something more, and subsequently and hesitantly takes her to Libbey Beach and alerts Xander (Ian Verdun) who notifies Ben and Maddie where he’s headed. The two escapees make it to Libbey Beach where Chris collapses to the ground. Meanwhile, his passenger leaves him behind in search for the water.

Ben and Maddie — with Ryn in tow — spot Chris’ car and chase after him. Moments later, Ryn spots her sister disorientingly walking away in the distance. She gets out of Ben’s car and follows her. The sisters are finally reunited on the shore of Libbey Beach in a beautiful, silent moment as Maddie and Ben watch near by. Donna carries her weak sister into the ocean where they finally swim together once again.

Chris is reunited with his friends, and Ryn is reunited with her sister — and it feels so good!

Did you cry as well when Ryn and Donna were re-united? How beautiful was those final seconds of the episode? Is Helen’s vast knowledge of mermaids is because she is one herself? Let us know your thoughts about the episode in the comments below!

Siren airs Thursdays at 8pm on Freeform.
