Finally! After multiple cliffhangers, plentiful plot twists and a whopping three whole years between seasons, Apple TV+’s Severance is at long last back! If you, like the Lumon staff, have forgotten key details of the last season, Apple was nice enough to post a season one recap on YouTube, which you can view below. Once you’re caught up, it’s time to jump back into one of the trippiest, twistiest and best shows on television!
In the season premiere, “Hello, Ms. Cobel,” Mark returns to work to find that lots has changed and new management is in charge. Mark is desperate for answers, but with answers come questions…
Running Away | The season begins with Mark (Adam Scott) waking up on the Severed floor and doing his best Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible impression and running his ass off through the halls and immediately running to the wellness center to find Ms. Casey- only to find that her office is gone. Mark’s next stop is Macrodata Refinement, where he finds three new coworkers who know who he is, as well as Milchick (Tramell Tillman), who greets him with balloons.
Milchick takes Mark to the management office and informs him that the Overtime Contingency was triggered five months ago before introducing himself to Ms. Huang (Sarah Bock), a literal child. Mark demands answers about where the others are, to which Milchick says that he now runs the Severed floor and Ms. Cobel was fired. As it turns out, the Overtime incident gained the group international fame, but Milchick was unable to convince Helly, Dylan and Irving to return to work- but the outside Mark insisted on returning to work.
Goodbye, Mark S. | Left with no choice, Mark returns to work under Ms. Huang’s watchful eye and gets to know his new coworkers: Gwendolyn (Alia Shawkat) and another man named Mark, AKA Mark W. (Bob Balaban) After a few weeks of work, Mark writes a nasty letter in Mark W.’s name, but Milchick immediately sees through it. Mark manages to distract Milchick long enough to race to his office and try to contact the board to get his team back, but Milchick stops him and sends him into the elevator, telling him goodbye.
Mark then wakes up in the elevator which opens to a different floor. After a moment, Dylan (Zach Cherry), Irving (John Turturro) and Helly (Britt Lower) emerge from the elevator one after the other. Naturally, they all have questions, but Mark insists that they don’t talk about what happened outside in case they are listening in on them. Ms. Huang then summons them to the Break Room, where Milchick is there with an educational video, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves, that explains that Lumon is reforming thanks to the Macrodata Revolution, as they call it, including new snacks in the vending machines and no cameras in any of the rooms.
Lumon is Listening | Milchick tells the team that they have till the end of the day to decide whether or not they still want to work at Lumon and if they don’t, no hard feelings. He leaves them to think it over and Mark finally tells them what he saw outside and that he found out Ms. Casey is his wife. Helly, however, obviously lies about what she saw and says she was sitting alone in an empty apartment. Irving refuses to say what he saw and walks out. While Dylan goes to talk to him, Helly tells Mark that she is staying at Lumon to find out what is really going on.
Dylan finds Irving trying to walk out of the building and he tries to convince him to stay, but Irving is dead set on leaving, upset that he saw Burt with someone else. Dylan tells him that Burt wouldn’t want him to leave, but Dylan is summoned to Milchick’s office by Ms. Huang. Milchick takes Dylan to a private room where he shows him blueprints of a new wing in the office where the Innies can visit their Outie’s families, but requests that Dylan not tell anyone else about it. Dylan returns to the department to find Mark, Helly and Irving back at work.
