SDCC: “Revival” Cast & Creators Discuss Their Addicting Undead Series & Shares Why It Stands Out From the Rest

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and creators of Revival took the stage in Room 6A to unpack the secrets behind SYFY’s eerie and emotionally charged supernatural drama. The show, based on the comic series by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, follows the mysterious return of the dead in small-town Wisconsin. What unfolded at the panel was a lively, heartfelt, and often hilarious deep dive into the creative choices that shaped the series.

The panel began with Seeley and Norton reflecting on how Revival was always meant for television. “We were just trying to survive the comic at first,” Seeley said. “But we always felt it had TV potential.” That potential finally took shape with director Luke Boyce and showrunner Aaron B. Koontz, who began working on the adaptation before the comic series even ended. Koontz initially considered a feature film, but reading the series convinced him it needed to be a show. “You need time to live with these characters. That’s what grabbed me. Not just the mystery, but who these people are.”

Casting was the first major challenge. Melanie Scrofano was the immediate pick for Dana. “We saw her reel and said… just put freckles on her. This is Dana,” Koontz recalled. Scrofano felt a deep connection to the character. “She’s juggling a lot, but not gracefully, and I can relate. I just focus on one thing at a time so I don’t have a panic attack. That’s Dana to me.”

For Romy Weltman, who plays Em, the role marked a career milestone. “I’ve never been given the chance to play someone so powerful before. And being smaller, you’re often told what you can’t do. This was a chance to redefine myself, just like Em is trying to do.”

The cast bonded quickly. One early moment came when Scrofano lost her car in a New Brunswick parking lot. Weltman helped her find it, and that little adventure cemented their dynamic. “That was my test,” Scrofano joked. “She passed.”

David James Elliott, who plays Sheriff Wayne, said he pulled from his own experiences as a father to understand the emotional complexity of the role. “You look at things in your life that are really important to you, and those become your guideposts.” One of the series’ most memorable scenes is the explosive confrontation between Dana and Wayne. Scrofano said it was tough to watch because of how real it felt. “I don’t agree with you, Dad, but I know you believe what you’re saying. That’s what makes it hard. You’re trying. But can you not be an asshole while you’re at it?”

That same episode also revealed one of the show’s biggest twists. Brent shot Dana. “We were in the writers’ room talking about who it could be, and someone said, well, it just can’t be Brent. And I said, uh huh,” Koontz explained. “Sometimes the story tells you what has to happen.”

One of the panel’s most talked-about behind-the-scenes moments was Em stabbing one of the Check brothers with her own broken bone. Koontz thought the idea was original until Boyce reminded him they had already done it in the comic. The show added Em’s brittle bone disease, giving the moment extra impact. “Let’s use her weakness as her strength,” Koontz said. Scrofano cracked, “Her boner! Her lady boner.” The crowd erupted.

Intimacy scenes brought their own challenges. Scrofano and Andy McQueen admitted that filming their romantic car moment was awkward and physically uncomfortable. Scrofano joked about the cramped space and giant coat she was wearing, while McQueen echoed the sentiment that filming those scenes never feels normal.

Visually, Revival stands apart with its distinct aesthetic. The series is set in 2008 to avoid modern tech and online virality. “We didn’t want TikTok videos of Revivers showing up in the story,” Koontz said. The team shot the show in a rare aspect ratio with vintage lenses that created soft light flares and a slightly dreamy visual tone. “SYFY had never aired anything in this format,” Boyce added.

Even the props were chosen with care. The team used boxy CRT televisions for their visual texture and as a nod to the era. Scrofano shared that her son was on set and was amazed by how big and heavy they were, especially compared to today’s screens.

The panel also premiered a teaser for Episode 8, which centers on Jesse and Rose Blackdeer. The story, quietly threaded through the first half of the season, will unfold through a flashback-heavy episode. “This is our Bill and Frank episode,” Koontz said, referencing The Last of Us. “It’s emotional, and it matters a lot to us.”

During the Q&A, a fan asked what would happen if a Reviver were cut vertically in half. That led to a rapid-fire burst of possibilities from the panel. Melanie jumped in and shouted, “Cut Romy in half and Orphan Black this shit,” drawing huge laughs and loud applause from the crowd.

In one of the final questions, the cast was asked what characters they would personally bring back from pop culture. Koontz chose Lester Bangs from Almost Famous. Scrofano picked Doc Holliday from Wynonna Earp. Weltman answered with Carlos from Outer Banks.

By the end of the panel, it was clear that Revival is not just about horror or resurrection. It is about grief, memory, survival, and connection. The series is shaped by its creators and cast with a deep love for the characters and the world they live in. Based on what was shared in Room 6A, the story of Revival is far from over.

Revival airs Thursdays at 10/9c on SYFY and stream the following week on Peacock.
