San Diego Comic Con can only mean one thing: The opportunity for fans to have once in a lifetime experiences revolving around their favorite shows and films. And with Alien: Earth arriving later this summer, FX pulled out all the stops for their interactive experience based off the highly anticipated series, called “The Wreckage: Code Red.”
Located on the lawn in front of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel directly across from the convention center where SDCC is held, the event is only open to those 18 and older- and for good reason given the R rated Alien franchise’s involvement. After 4:30 PM, the “Code Red” event triggers for those looking for a thrill and a more intense dive into the world of the upcoming series.
As you’ll see in our video walkthrough below, “The Wreckage” lived up to its title, with spaceship parts and Weyland-Yutani canisters haphazardly strewn across the area. There was also numerous decals for the Prodigy Corporation, which remains a mystery as of now, but we’re certain all will be revealed come August 12.
Unfortunately, no actual Xenomorphs were spotted at the Wreckage- unless you count a statue of one Alien snarling at guests as they exit, which many didn’t notice since it was stationed behind the final exit. There was, however, a tense moment involving an unlucky worker and a face hugger, all of which was captured on a hidden camera whose footage guests could download on their way out via QR Code.
The most impressive part of the event was the numerous employees of Weyland-Yutani stationed throughout the Wreckage, guiding you on your dangerous journey. Each and every member of the cast not only took the work seriously, adding to the immersion of it all, but displayed some serious acting chops. No two cast members acted the same either, creating a more thrilling and unpredictable experience.
And of course, this being SDCC, there were plenty of free giveaways. Each guest gets a plastic Prodigy Corp ID badge complete with an Alien: Earth lanyard, a collectible pin and a fizzy orange beverage with a high tech, in universe label. Other guests I spoke to who attended also received a massive Earth styled jawbreaker in a box resembling the Xenomorph’s iconic maw.
The Wreckage: Code Red was an immersive event that transported you to another planet in the Alien universe with panache. Thanks to the detailed sets, the skilled performers and the free swag, it only gets us even more excited for what else FX has up their sleeve for the series premiere.
