San Diego Comic-Con 2024 buzzed with excitement as fans and creators alike gathered to celebrate the return of Wyononna Earp with its new special, Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. The press room was abuzz with energy as Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) and Tim Rozon (Doc Holliday) sat down to discuss their highly anticipated return to their iconic roles.
Slipping Back into the Roles | When asked about slipping back into their beloved characters, Melanie Scrofano offered a refreshingly candid take. “Slipping is an interesting word for many reasons,” she joked. “It’s not even a sex joke yet. But, uh, it’s slippery, it was cold. It was really cold. Uh, you’d slip on pants that don’t want to slip anymore. Do you know what I mean? So then you’d, so, there was, uh, and then there was some slipping. Wet floor.” Her humorous struggle with fitting into old costumes resonated with many who understand the struggles of returning to past selves.
Tim Rozon chimed in with his own take on wardrobe woes. “Yes, I’m also, if I have clothes, I’m happy. Where I am sometimes in a lot of things that I do, I’ve walked in my room and there’s just a towel, and I’m like, okay? Um, so any pants, sometimes, better than no pants. There may or may not be no pants in the special. Don’t recall.”
Rehearsal and Chemistry | The dynamic between Scrofano and Rozon was palpable as they reminisced about filming. Rozon described one of their more memorable scenes: “We were on the train and stuff. I do remember that was one of the only things that we actually rehearsed, which is crazy because we just really don’t have time to ever do rehearsals or anything. We did a rehearsal at the dojo. Yeah, you were really good. And then, we changed it, of course, on the day.”
Scrofano added a lighthearted touch to their on-set experience. “That was easy-ish. It was on our coldest day. So it was just, we were on the, uh, top of a, it [the train] wasn’t that high.”
Rozon appreciated their working relationship, saying, “Not to be corny, but we’re good dance partners. Like, in any sense you’re trying to put us, it kind of still works. And the best part about Wynonna is, if it didn’t work, then that’s what it would have been.”
Where We Left Off and Moving Forward | Fans were eager to know how the special picks up from where the series left off. Scrofano noted, “It’s been a couple of years, and it’s a nice pickup from where we left off. Like, you’re not going to be blown away by any, where we start in terms of like, what? That makes no sense. It makes perfect sense.”
Rozon assured viewers both old and new, “We’re on a new home [Tubi]. For new viewers, anybody coming over to be watching it. If you don’t know everything, you’re going to be fine. The special could be its own thing, but trust me, we’re highly aware of what Earpers are, what they want, and they’re going to get it.”

Character Evolution and Personal Reflections | The conversation took a more introspective turn as Scrofano reflected on how she brings parts of herself into Wynonna. “I felt like I was betraying people by not being where I was a few years ago. But after talking to Emily Andras, I felt better. I’m just so aware, like in this business you can’t help but compare. I was like, oh man, I’m not her. Like, I’m her, but I’m not her. And so, she’s just older and no wiser really.”
Rozon elaborated on the depth of Doc and Wynonna’s journey in the special. “There’s so many layers that I just realized that we play, even within the special. I feel like where we started, even at the beginning of the special, from where we came to where we end, so much happens.”
Scrofano praised the show’s creator, Emily Andras, for her nuanced approach to storytelling. “She just allows for such humanity. It’s not like, just like, happily ever after, at least, that doesn’t exist. So let’s just go, okay, what is the reality, and how can we find the beauty of that.”
As Comic-Con 2024 wrapped up, it was clear that the magic of Wynonna Earp remains strong. Fans can look forward to Wynonna Earp: Vengeance offering a mix of familiar charm and fresh twists, all while capturing the beloved essence of its characters.
