“Supergirl” Stars Talk Supergirl’s New Suit, Fallout of Lena’s Betrayal & More!

Going into the fifth season of The CW’s Supergirl, the cast and creative team behind the show spoke with OMFGTV to talk all things Supergirl, including new storylines for next season, the Girl of Steel’s new threads and much more.

First up, Melissa Benoist, who plays the titular character, dished on the buzz worthy new Supergirl suit she’ll be donning in season five. “I love the new suit,” Benoist said. “The skirt, I was so happy with it. We had different versions of the suit, but I never felt that we needed it, until we were up in Vancouver and it was really cold! This just feels like the right evolution for Supergirl and Kara. It feels more modern and adult, and I’m really happy with it.”

With last season seeing Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) finally discover Supergirl’s secret identity, Benoist addressed the source of Lena’s heartbreak over the news. “I think if it had come from Kara first, we wouldn’t be having any conflict. But we also wouldn’t have a lot of the storylines this year!”

McGrath herself had lots to say on Lena’s feelings on the reveal of Kara’s secret. “We’re five seasons in and we’ve been building up to this. It’s a huge moment for my character and Melissa’s character. The idea for Lena is what this does to you as a person. When you realize that not only has your best friend been lying to you, but everyone has been lying to you and how that makes you feel separate and badly.”

“I think the Lena you see at the end of season four hasn’t thought about that yet,” McGrath continued. “In season five, she’s still coming to terms with this huge thing. When everything you know has been taken away from you, how do you stand back up and keep going?”

Executive Producer Jessica Queller also weighed on in that moment and how it played out in the writers’ room. “Once we knew that we had Lex Luthor and we had Jon Cryer, it came to us pretty quickly,” Queller said. “No one can put salt in a wound for Lena like her brother Lex. That was a really important moment that will impact this season tremendously.”

“The dynamic between Kara and Lena will, of course, be completely changed,” Queller continued. “Lena’s Achilles Heel is betrayal, so the fact that the person she trusted most has lied to her in this way really devastates her. We’ll be battling for their friendship and we’ll see if it can recover.”

Queller also revealed that season five will revolve around the theme of technology and its uses for better or worse. “When we ousted that president last season, there’s a lot of work to do to rebuild the society and the nation. It’s so overwhelming, so you kind of want to escape and hide. Last season organically bleeds into this season in a way.”

Supergirl Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 6 at 9pm on The CW.
