At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, PopWire sat down with Julie Plec and Brett Matthews, executive producers of The CW’s “Legacies,” to chat about the show’s upcoming second season and teased several new dynamics for the show.
Matthews began by addressing Hope’s sacrifice last season, jumping into the Malivore pit and erasing herself from existence, and how that will affect our characters. “Landon immediately comes to mind, because what would his life even look like without Hope?” Matthews said.
“Those two were written in the stars in a way, and yet, life doesn’t always work out that way. Life moves on, that’s the one constant. You go to a funeral for somebody you’ve known your whole life and you still have to get up and go to work the next day. What does that look like on our characters and the world of our show?”
“The plan was to start with a character who didn’t belong in the social zone, who’s lost so much and who didn’t really understand what her purpose for existence was,” Plec said of Hope’s character arc this season.
“Because so many people died in the name of keeping her alive, we wanted to send her on a journey where she found her friends, she found her squad, she found love, and then put her in a position where she found her purpose, but her purpose meant losing everything that she gained. Season two is a very clear fallout of that. Hope will realize what she left behind and a year ago she might not even have cared about will break her if she can’t get it back.”
Speaking of Hope, Plec, who has spoken of potentially having a surviving member of Hope’s family from “The Originals” appear on “Legacies,” dropped some good news and bad news on the subject. “We just wrote a scene for Aunt Freya, only to discover that that’s the exact time that (Riley Voelkel) is going back to ‘Roswell!’
“We’ll see if we can make it work, though! But because Hope is our lead and her family, with some exceptions, are still with us, I would love to see anybody from ‘The Originals.’ But there is a scene that may never get shot that stars Freya Mikaelson.” (EDIT: Voelkel has been confirmed to guest star in season two!)
Last season, fans saw a menagerie of monsters torment our heroes, including a genie, a merman and a Gorgon- which Plec noted cost $7,000 per each snake on her head. Matthews and Plec revealed their wish list for the new monsters in season two.
“We’ve always wanted to do a Christmas episode,” Matthews said. “I want to see evil Santa Claus, or Krampus.” “We want to see Cupid around Valentine’s Day.” Plec said, as Matthews added, “Or Cupid’s asshole brother!”
One of the fan favorite characters last season was Penelope Park, Josie Saltzman’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, who left the Salvatore School last season. Plec revealed, “We have definitely been talking about the different ways we can keep Penelope around on this show.
“In the short term, we have something that will make her presence felt without seeing her in person. In the long term, we want to see Josie explore her life, her high school world, her family and her sexuality. But that was a pretty successful character, so with luck, we’ll be able to keep her alive on the show.”
“Legacies” Season 2 premieres Thursday, October 10 on The CW.
