SDCC: “Cloak & Dagger” Cast & EPs Talk Show’s Music, Getting Their Roles, “Mayhem” For Season 2 & More!

Hot off the airing of their July 19 episode, “Ghost Stories,” the cast and creative team behind Freeform’s newest and hottest summer series, “Cloak & Dagger,” took Ballroom 20 of San Diego Comic Con by storm. Series stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Emma Lahana, Ally Maki and executive producers Joe Pokaski and Jeph Loeb revealed secrets from the show’s past eight episodes, teased the first season’s final two episodes, and ended with a huge surprise.

After a highlight reel of the past eight episodes was screened for the crowd, Loeb asked Pokaski how music plays a role in the show. “We overthink music way too much,” Pokaski said. “I like to play songs in the writers room and I like to piss off the lawyers who say this song is too expensive.”

Loeb asked the cast how they found out they got their coveted roles in the Marvel Universe. Holt revealed that she got the call after singing the national anthem at the Pro Bowl and was told, “Welcome to Marvel.” Joseph added that he got the same call while driving to the beach with his friends. Lahana auditioned for an untitled Marvel role, which was written under the name “Callaghan,” and only realized that she was playing Brigid O’Reilly when she got the final script and realized the name was a placeholder.

The panel also addressed the series embracing the location of New Orleans as opposed to the comics’ original setting of New York. “The people of that city have been through so much hardship,” Joseph said. “And they keep getting back up and having Mardi Gras every year.” Pokaski added, “New York is very well protected between Spider-Man and Iron Fist.”

During the audience Q&A portion, a fan asked if the series will do a crossover with “Runaways.” Loeb cryptically said “Wait and see.”

Maki briefly discussed the importance of playing an original character in the Marvel Universe by saying, “When I was growing up, there weren’t a lot of girls on TV who looked like me. Now, we have so many strong, diverse leads.” Holt built upon that by saying, “We’re doing a superhero duo that’s black and white in 2018 and we’re changing the game.”

Finally, Pokaski walked up to Loeb to show him a text message he just received. Though Holt was nervous about what it said, it turned out to be good news: “Cloak & Dagger” has been renewed for a second season.

Loeb concluded the panel with a brief reel of clips from the final two episodes of the season, which had technical difficulties as the audio briefly blacked out. The final clip simply said, “Season 2 will be mayhem,” which was slashed through with claw marks.
