SDCC: Kelly’s Pregnancy, A Bad-Ass New Character, Romance for Doc & More of What We Learned at the “Van Helsing” Panel

Syfy’s Van Helsing was among one of the many panels presented at San Diego Comic Con 2017, and OMFGTV was front row to get all the scoop! With the show’s sophomore season premiering on October 5, we’ve decided it’s time to share what we learned to get you excited!

By the end of season 1, Doc is on her own, Axel is a vampire, Sam is a serial killer who has made an enemy out of Julius, and Vanessa discovered she had been betrayed and her daughter is a vampire.

The majority of the cast attended the panel, although star Kelly Overton was only able to be there via Skype call.

Kelly was Pregnant! | The biggest shocker at the panel came early on when Kelly Overton revealed that she was actually pregnant the whole season. “It seems to be a big year for pregnant superheroes, if anybody’s noticed. I’m happy to be amongst the ranks.” Although Kelly was 6 months pregnant when they began shooting, she says she has never felt so powerful in her life, and she wanted that to translate to Vanessa.”

Sam’s Evolution | Sam started season 1 as the guy everyone presumed was innocent, but it turns out he’s the most evil of the hospital crew! According to Christopher Heyerdahl, Sam had to pretend a lot in season 1, but just gets to be himself in season 2. “In season 1 he had to pretend that he was just a regular person who likes to hang out with people and not kill them. In season 2 he just gets to enjoy himself.”

Scarlett is a Badass | There’s a new ass-kicking lady joining the Van Helsing crew this season, and that’s Scarlett, played by Missy Peregrym. Missy was very excited to join the cast and felt she really fit in right away. “Plus, my character is a badass.” Scarlett is unlike the others on the show because of how she was raised. “My character is very different because [she’s] been trained to kill vampires before The Rising had happened.”

The Cast Directs | Both Jonathan Scarfe and Paul Johanson will be directing 2 episodes this season. Both men are very grateful and thankful for the experience.

What is Going on With Doc?!? | Last season, Doc lost everything and was left completely alone. Rukiya Bernard is beyond thrilled for fans to see what Doc’s been up to! “This season I’m so excited to share her, because I feel that she is coming into her own. She’s being tested at every single corner, and she’s having to decide to save herself, choose to save other people as well, and try to get to safety.” Doc may also be getting a little action, Bernard teased that Doc may also be falling in love this season.

Season 2 Teases | Both Showrunner Neil LaBute and Kelly Overton were able to tease a little about the upcoming season. LaBute says this season we will not see Dracula, but we will be seeing him in future seasons if they continue to get picked up. He also teases lots of blood. “You’re gonna see blood.” Blood is the currency of the land in Van Helsing, so there will be no shortage of it this season. Overton teases lots of twists and turns! “One of the things that the show does so well is all the turns and surprises. This season goes above and beyond what anybody could ever imagine would happen to just about every character out there.”

Van Helsing Season 2 premieres Thursday, October 5, at 9pm on Syfy.
