“The Magicians” Stars Jason Ralph & Stella Maeve on Absence of Magic, Kady’s Return & More

Over the summer OMFGTV was among the thousands of attendees at San Diego Comic-Con. It’s there where we chatted with stars of Syfy’s The Magicians, Jason Ralph and Stella Maeve, about their upcoming third season.

At the beginning of the series, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) is the one out of his group of friends that discovers magic — first at Brakebills then in Fillory. By the end of season 2 magic has become extinct, only Julia (Stella Maeve) is left with a tinge of it.

“I think it’s about time Julia got something good with the run she’s had,” Maeve tells us. The actress is very happy Julia is the one left with some magic because she’s been through a lot, but this season will be about more than just Julia having magic. This problem is bigger. “There is no magic.”

Jason Ralph poses an interesting question about many inventions over the centuries. “What happens when these inventions that these brilliant people created begin to fail?” The show has often hinted that several of our brightest inventors may have been magicians, so what happens to all those inventions without magic? “There are so many real world consequences to losing magic,” he says, “because magic is and has been the great energy source of this world.”

Fans of Kady (Jade Tailor) have no fear, Stella confirms Kady will be back! But things between the “best bitches” won’t be the same. “Kady does come back into the picture, whether they’re on as good of terms as they once were, not yet.”

Quentin and Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) also aren’t on the best of terms. At the end of season 2 Alice was furious with Quentin for changing her back from a niffin, and things between them for season 3 seem like they may be the same.

“She’s a different person,” Ralph explains. “And he is also a different person throughout the experiences that he had last season. The love of his life died like 4 times, and the amount of loss and grieving he did is astronomical.” But Jason says Quintin has also done a lot of growing, so we’ll have to wait and see how these two interact moving forward.

The Magicians Season 3 premieres Wednesday, January 10, at 9pm on Syfy.
