“Schmigadoon!” Recap: Bridge to Nowhere

Recap of Episode “Cross That Bridge”

In the latest episode of Apple TV+’s Schmigadoon!, Melissa and Josh agree to a new plan when their first flings end in regret. When he quickly casts aside that plan, she is prompted to make a fresh start. Written by Julie Klausner and Bowen Yang and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, here’s what unfolded in the episode, “Cross that Bridge.”

Melissa (Cecily Strong) wakes up in Danny’s (Aaron Tveit) bed the morning after their date. He’s prepared a vast selection of breakfast items for the “lady doctor from New York City,” and sings that she has him tamed. He asks if she’s ready to make an honest man out of him, but she tells him that what happened was just a one-time thing. She explains that she and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) just had a little lovers’ spat, and that though she’s made some “really hot mistakes,” thinks she’s going to patch things up.

Betsy (Dove Cameron) gathers with all her sisters and excitedly announces that she can now be called Mrs. Doctor Josh Skinner MD. Around the corner Josh quietly calls for Melissa, where she lets him know that she can’t believe he’s engaged to the waitress. “He was going to shoot me,” he informs her, referring to Bety’s father. “He pointed a full-on Elmer Fudd shotgun at my face and forced me to propose to her on the spot. I had no choice.”

Melissa and Josh find that they have lost their accommodations at the Schmigadoon Inn due to the “Mothers Against the Future,” a group led by Midlred Layton (Kristin Chenoweth). She lets the couple know that the group is against people like them who are contaminating the town with their “urban ways.” Because of their “outrageous” and “unseemly” behavior, Mildred tells them that no one in town will give them lodging.

Josh has a talk with “Mrs. Doctor Josh Skinner,” where he tries to break it off with her. She tells him that she’s so excited and can’t wait to be married. He tells her that she’s still young and has her whole life ahead of her, so there’s no need to rush into things. She brings up that it’s true love, which clicks in Josh’s head that he and Betsy should try walking across the bridge. “Maybe you’re my way out,” he says. Unfortunately, or fortunately, it doesn’t work.

Josh comes up with the brilliant plan to gather all of the single women of Schmigadoon and invites them to cross the bridge with him. One by one, the women cross the bridge hoping they’ll be met with the “Skinner Feeling.” Just like Betsy before them, none of them seem to be able to bring Josh back to the real world. Melissa catches him in his ploy and is upset that he had been trying to get out while she had been looking for a place for them to stay.

Josh finds shelter at the church where he is met by Reverend Layton (Fred Armisen). The doctor opens up, sharing that he believes there’s no way for him to find true love. The reverend tells Josh that true love is probably not something you find, but rather something you make. A knock at the door finds Schoolmarm Emma Tate delivering unused clothes the reverend can give to the poor. Josh realizes that Emma didn’t try to cross the bridge with him, so she could possibly be the one.

Meanwhile, Melissa wanders the streets of Schmigadoon alone, reflecting on her relationship. “Things with Josh have gone from bad to worse,” she sings. She knocks on the door with a “closed” sign displayed, and when opened, asks about the open nurse position. The elderly couple who answer the door call on their son, whom she is there to meet. Doctor Jorge Lopez (Jaime Camil) shows up and Melissa is left breathless. “Yee honk,” she says, followed with a flirty smile.
