“Runaways” Recap: Good Karma

The second season of Marvel and Hulu’s “Runaways” is finally here with all 13 episodes available for streaming/binging. The season’s debut, “Gimmie Shelter,” picks up immediately where season one left off, with our favorite teenage superheroes on the run and their villainous parents going to drastic measures to bring them home.

We Suck At Being Runaways | With most of the first season having the characters still living at home, it’s nice to see season two embracing its title and having the Runaways, well, on the run. Quite literally, as the season opens with the six of them chasing down a biker named Mike, who has made off with Chase’s Fistigons, along with all of their money. Facing the challenge of finding food on little to no budget, Alex sneaks away to Darius to get some more money. Darius tells Alex he’ll have to earn the money and after getting Alex’s fingerprints on a gun as collateral, makes Alex paint the room for Darius’s arriving baby. Also, Alex meets Darius’s cousin, Livvie, whom Alex is immediately smitten with.

Casualty of War | On the Pride side of things, the parents are alarmed when Molly’s aunt Graciela goes on the news and says that she knows that Pride is not what they seem to be. Turns out Molly left her the tape from season one that exposed the Pride’s plot for the dig site. Dale and Stacey try to talk to Graciela with reason, which goes sideways in a really crazy fashion, as Graciela outright tries to shoot them! Unfortunately, Tina arrives and uses the Staff of One to kill Graciela and make it look like an accident.

Welcome Home | The Runaways- sans Alex- arrive at Graciela’s house after seeing the same news report only to find her body. Molly is devastated, feeling that she caused her death and Nico holds a magical funeral for Graciela in a very powerful moment. The next morning, Old Lace chases down Mike and Chase gets his Fistigons back, but Karolina falls into a hole. She survives by flying, but finds a buried underground mansion of sorts, the Hostel, where the Runaways set up shop.

Back with the Pride, they figure out what was on the tape from Molly’s parents and realize that Jonah is lying to them about his intentions and vow to destroy him. Speaking of Jonah, he meets the comatose Victor in a cool, virtual diner where the aspect ratio changes and asks him to build another box for him, as he is decaying once more. Jonah then gets a text from someone asking to meet. He arrives a hilltop and meets… KAROLINA!

In fairness, she’s just talking to him to find out more about why she’s glowing, but then a small earthquake occurs and Jonah tells her that this is just the beginning…

“Runaways” season two is now streaming on Hulu.
