Recap of Episode ‘Hypnos’

When we last saw the vampires of Akron, Maurice was caught up in a bloody ménage à quatre with frenemy Angela, her minion Penelope, and his partner Mike. Not long after delivering Mike’s torn-out heart to him, Maurice discovers he was drugged and subsequently placed into a coffin destined to burn to his death.

In the latest episode of Reginald the Vampire, the fates of Mike and Maurice are revealed, along with a secret new power that Maurice’s progeny yields. Here’s what went down in episode “Hypnos.”

LISTEN TO ME | Maurice (Mandela Van Peebles) narrowly escapes from being incinerated by vampire deacon Angela. His savior in this situation — Reginald. The freshly-free vampire learns that the Slushy Shack employee-turned-vampire has the impossible ability to glamour fellow fanged fiends. Reginald managed to glamour Eric (Andre Tricoteux) to get past him in order to save his new friend.

“No vampire in the history of vampires — and it’s a very long history — has ever been able to glamour another vampire,” Maurice tells him. Reginald is warned that if he doesn’t keep this unprecedented superpower a secret, Angela will hunt him down, kill him and everyone he knows and loves… including Sarah.

Reginald has a little fun with his glamour powers and appoints Eric as his personal TaskRabbit, where the now gentle giant delivers croque madame sandwiches to his master and color codes his closet. The fun is short-lived, however, as Reginald knows that having someone become a bodyguard and butler against their will is not a good thing to do.

“You are no longer my personal manservant, personal chef, and best friend,” he tells Eric, their eyes locked on each other. “Go. Go far, far away from here, and find a life better than the one that you are living.”

ASSESS THIS MESS | Angela (Savannah Basley) is furious at Maurice for turning Reginald into a vampire. “He is defective, grotesque, and an insult to our fury,” she spouts at him. Later, though, she decides to work with Maurice (!) on an idea that she has that will benefit both of them equally. Naturally, she has ulterior motives.

Angela and Maurice arrive at Reginald’s with a phone book-sized contract for him to sign. “In order for you to be accepted into the Midwest Chapter of the Vampire Council of America, you, Reginald Andres, will take part in the vampiric ability and potential assessment henceforth known as the assessment. Assessed for suitability. We can’t just let anyone join our ranks.”

Despite Reginald’s ability to power read through a book and retain all of its contents, he blindly signs on the dotted lines, with his blood, no less. Angela packs up the paperwork in her suitcase and she is gone as fast as she arrived.

Reginald preps for the assessment with Maurice, boxing gloves, and all. And what Reginald finds out a little too late, is that if he fails the assessment, he dies. That ulterior motive that Angela has? If Reginald doesn’t impress with his vampiric abilities, he will be sentenced to death, and along with his death will come Maurice’s. Two vamps, one stake.

REMEMBER THE TIME | The night Maurice glamoured Sarah (Em Haine) to forget when and why she was at Reginald’s apartment, the vampire wiped a lot more than he should have from her memory. At the Slushy Shack, the self-described normal girl shares with Reginald and Ashley (Marguerite Hanna) — who, by the way, is starting to pick up on all the suspicious stuff going on — that pieces of her life is missing.

Reginald sees that Maurice glamoured Sarah too much to the point where even her feelings for Reginald have dissolved. Reginald can’t stand by and watch as she loses that connection with him, so on a perfectly overcast day, he follows her to a park in the hopes that even a sliver of her memory of the two of them returns.

This time, without the help of Maurice, Reginald once again asks Sarah out on a date. They dine at a fancy Filipino restaurant where she is introduced to some of the foods of Reginald’s culture: lumpia and pansit. Slowly, it seems, Sarah’s memory is starting to return.

The evening seems to go off without a hitch until Reginald spots LeBron (Sean Yves Lessard) and Penelope (Georgia Waters) walk in. Reginald excuses himself from the table, approaches Angela’s minions, and glamours them. Reginald returns to his date, and with the snap of his fingers, LeBron and Penelope put on a show for all the diners at the restaurant.

What starts out funny and amusing, quickly becomes over the top and “disgusting.” Reginald notices Sarah’s discomfort, and on command, puts a stop to the messy commotion going on at the other table. Unbeknownst to Reginald, a secret spy witnessed the whole performance and his superpower at work: Mike (Ryan Jinn). Why was he at the restaurant, and why is he reporting to Angela?

Written by Alexandra Zarowny and directed by David Frazee, “Hypnos” was a fun and funny episode, one that even brought us to tears at one point. The episode also mentions Logan and Nikki for the first time, both characters who appear in the “Fat Vampire” books on which the show is based. We’re looking forward to seeing their introduction.
