Powerless Recap: Number One Draft Pick

This week on Powerless, Emily struggles to motivate her team to finish their newest product by their fast approaching deadline. Van deals with being cropped out of the Wayne Dream Team poster and takes matters into his own hands. Written by Dean Lorey and directed by Marc Buckland, here is what happened in episode two “Wayne Dream Team”.

FRIEND BOSS | Fresh off their win with the scent powered supervillain locator, the team is feeling the pressure from corporate to churn out another hit product. Next on their list is the rubble-proof umbrella or Rumbrella. Emily (Vanessa Hudgens) makes a hefty promise that they will have it done by Friday and the team is not happy about the thought of staying late every night just to finish it in time. She is fighting a losing battle for their attention with the Fantasy Superhero Draft and goes to Jackie (Christina Kirk) for advice. Jackie points out that she is their boss, not their friend, and that sometimes a boss has to be a dick, pointing to Samuel (guest star Michael D. Cohen), head of HR, as a perfect example. All Emily hears is that SOMEONE has to be the bad guy, not necessarily her so she enlists Samuel to block the fantasy site on their work computers. Instead, he takes the entire internet away. Ron (Ron Funches) catches her coming out of HR’s office so she lies and tells them she was in their trying to get their internet back for them. Feeling bad about how they treated her given she just went to bat for them (or so they think), Teddy (Danny Pudi) calls them all to refocus their energy on the Rumbrella. Just when Emily thinks she’s got this boss/friend balance down perfectly, an altercation with Samuel has him revealing to the whole office it was she who asked him to take their internet away in the first place. She tries to fix it by taking the entire office’s place watching a six-hour anti-bullying video so that they don’t have to but because she is taking the place of everyone, she has to watch it four times. At hour 24 Jackie brings the team to come save her because she has begun twitching and singing the anti-bulling song to herself. They thank her for taking the bullet for them and invite her to join their fantasy league. On top of everything, they manage to get the Rumbrella done in time, keeping Ron’s granny’s head firmly in place.

“YOU’VE BEEN MEMED” | Van (Alan Tudyk) is upset because he has been cropped out of the Wayne Dream Team poster and takes it upon himself to fix it. He stages his own photoshoot and with Jackie’s help, photoshops himself into the poster and rehangs it in the hall for all to see. The photo he chose however, is of him giving finger guns, which is just too sweet an opportunity for the rest of the office to pass up. They photoshop him into countless scenes, effectively turning Fingerguns Van into the office meme. They even have a cardboard cutout. Jackie, feeling bad for him, convinces the original photographer to give her the full print that includes Van and has it added to the original poster. While he is a horrible boss, he takes care of Jackie and her family in his own weird, Van Wayne way so she puts up with his antics.

FANTASY DRAFT | The team is caught up in the annual Fantasy Superhero League draft and it is the most believable part of any universe in which powered people exist. They argue over who each of their top picks will be, referencing Superman as the fool’s choice. Teddy decides to go with The Flash as his top pick and is pretty proud of the steal. After Emily takes the fall for them with the anti-bullying video marathon, they invite her to join the draft where she picks Crimson Fox. They all laugh at her because Crimson Fox would never save enough people to win but not long after, they see a report that Crimson Fox just saved a cruise ship full of people and Emily is the one laughing. To add insult to injury, The Flash gets banished to the Phantom Zone, effectively removing him and Teddy from the running.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
• I really enjoy the credits style of old school comic book battles but focusing on the random citizens who are the main characters of this show.
• I spent way too long thinking about what DC hero I would have as my number one draft pick. There was even Wiki referencing involved.
• Can we go back and talk more about the fact that they have a section of the city called Murder Town? MuTo for short.

So what did you think? Who would you pick from the DC universe to be your first pick? Would you buy a Rumbrella? Let us know in the comments below!

Powerless airs Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on NBC!
