It’s Sidney vs Ghostface in First Trailer and Poster for “Scream”

“What’s your favorite scary movie?”

That iconic line can only mean one thing: Ghostface is back in the first trailer for Scream, the much anticipated fifth installment in the famous horror franchise. Returning for round five is Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, reprising their roles from the previous four films, plus newcomers Jack Quaid (“The Boys”), Melissa Barrera (“In the Heights”) and Dylan Minnette (“13 Reasons Why”).

The film is directed by “Ready or Not” duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the first filmmakers to helm a Scream film since Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Speaking of the pair, Campbell told Entertainment Weekly, “The idea of making these films without Wes Craven seemed challenging to me. I loved the man very much. But Matt and Tyler wrote me a letter speaking of their appreciation and great respect for Wes Craven and speaking of the fact that the very reason they are directors today was because of these movies and because of Wes, and that meant a great deal to me.” “I feel Wes would be so happy with the way Matt and Tyler have rebooted this franchise,” Cox added.

The film is written by James Vanderbilt (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and Guy Busick (“Ready or Not”) with original screenwriter Kevin Williamson as producer. “Knowing that Kevin Williamson was an executive producer on it set me at ease,” said Arquette. “He really knows the tone. I mean, he set the whole world up!”

The Scream films have been notoriously spoiler phobic in the past, writing fake scripts to keep the big reveal of the killer’s identity a secret. In continuing that trend, Gillett said, “We were really careful to protect the big reveal of the movie. We went as far as to withhold those moments in the script from the actors.”

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.

Scream hits theaters on January 14, 2022.
