With every spin-off show comes the possibility of a crossover with the show’s flagship series since they’re all set in the same universe. With all of the remaining (read: still alive) Original vampires heading off to New Orleans in The CW’s freshman series, The Originals, we wanted to know if any of The Vampire Diaries characters will be ditching Mystic Falls for New Orleans.
OMFGtv chatted with The Originals boss, Julie Plec, during the San Diego Comic-Con where she shared her thoughts on having characters on both shows cross paths once again.
When last we saw Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), he and Rebekah (Claire Holt) had been planning a romantic road trip, and since this was decided on the season finale of The Vampire Diaries, it was easy to assume that the pair would end their trip in the Big Easy where the Originals once called home.
When asked about whether or not Matt leaves his home town for New Orleans to join the off-shoot, showrunner Julie Plec remained tight-lipped. “You never know,” she teased. “I would love to bring Matt Donovan over for a little adventure: They discover something and he needs a favor and he needs Rebekah to help him find it. Nothing would make me happier.” Though she didn’t give a definitive answer, she does reveal that the duo will appear in the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries calling it “great and fun” and Rebekah — absent from the series premiere of The Originals — will find herself reunited with her brothers in episode two.
Matt aside, we asked Plec about the likelihood of other characters and storylines from both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals intertwining. “We’re definitely going to try,” she says. “We’ve got pitches for everyone. We’ll focus first on getting the show set as its own with its own voice and its own audience, you know, those that may not have seen The Vampire Diaries so that we don’t just blindside them with Klaroline. Then it just becomes a matter of can we make it work.”
