“The Originals” Recap: Calm Before the Storm

“The Originals” followed up last week’s devastating death with a bittersweet episode that highlighted the struggle of the Mikaelson family. “God’s Gonna Trouble the Water” saw Klaus lash out against Elijah and Antoinette, causing Elijah to propose an interesting deal. Klaus discovers information that will forever change his relationship with Hope.

Apex Predators | If you’re still watching the show after Hayley freakin’ died, Elijah and Antoinette meet Emmet and an army of vampires who are on Greta’s side who want to fight against Klaus. As Elijah and Antoinette are leaving, however, Klaus snaps Elijah’s neck and bites Antoinette, essentially dooming her to death, and orders his men to imprison the pair.

Elijah tries to bargain with Klaus to get the blood he needs to save Antoinette’s life by promising he’ll make Marcel and Vincent bring back his memories if Klaus saves Antoinette. Klaus, being Klaus, refuses the deal, telling Marcel that Elijah let Hayley die and is therefore dead to him. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I’m on Klaus’s side here. Anyone who lets Phoebe Tonkin die deserves the worst.

Action Means Dead People | As New Orleans prepares for *Sniff* Hayley’s funeral, Ivy tells Vincent that an ancient witch’s prophecy predicted the end of New Orleans if the Mikaelsons are too close together. Ivy reveals this to Klaus as he tries to go comfort Hope at the funeral, but reveals a pretty crucial tidbit: The final plague of the prophecy will kill all firstborns in New Orleans, including Freya and Hope.

During the funeral, Marcel and Vincent plot to secretly agree to Elijah’s offer to get his memories back. They meet him, but won’t give Antoinette the cure unless Elijah gets his memories back first. As they do the spell, Elijah ends up in that “Matrix” style white hallway with the red door at the end. Elijah tries to open the door, but passes out mysteriously before he can.

Signs of the End | Freya and Hope prepare to give Hayley a werewolf sendoff and Keelin arrives to comfort Freya. As they send her body off into the water, Klaus appears in person to hug Hope, which causes the water to burst into flames. Klaus promises Hope that he will start calling and be there for her from afar, but they can never be physically together again. They exchange “I love yous,” but as Klaus leaves, he inexplicably passes out and wakes up trapped in the compound with Elijah.

“The Originals” airs Wednesdays on The CW.
