“The Originals” Recap: How to Be A Vampire

Much like “Agents of SHIELD” and “Stranger Things” before it, “The Originals” takes a character focused detour episode in “Ne Me Quitte Pas” and delivers a standout hour. Picking up in the immediate aftermath of Marcel erasing Elijah’s memory, the amnesia stricken Elijah struggles to remember who he really is. By the time he’s accepted his new life, Klaus arrives to shake things up.

Don’t Look Back | Turns out Marcel’s compulsion of Elijah to forget worked a little too well, as immediately after the event, Elijah doesn’t remember his name or even what vampires are. After feeding on a few innocent bystanders, Elijah makes his way to New York City, where he meets Antionette, a vampire who teaches him the benefits of being a bloodsucking monster.

The Power of Fear | Antoinette doesn’t wear a daylight ring so she can enjoy being a vampire and not pretend to be human. As she and Elijah grow closer, Marcel arrives and orders Elijah to stop looking for answers and leave NYC. Elijah starts slaughtering his way through the vampire population of New York to get to Marcel and eventually finds him again. Marcel tells Elijah that his looking for answers will get an innocent girl in danger, and so, Elijah goes to France to reunite with Antionette.

Letting Go | Back in present day, Elijah and Antoinette are playing piano at the bar when Elijah pops the question to her. She goes to get champagne and is met by Klaus who compels her to leave him, but she is on the anti-compulsion serum and alerts Elijah to Klaus’s presence. Klaus tries to get Elijah to come home to save Hayley, but Elijah reveals that he looked up the Mikaelsons and was not thrilled with their exploits and so, he wants no part of Klaus’s life.

This is enough to convince Klaus to leave and tell Freya that Elijah is gone. Antionette also reveals that she knows the Mikaelson history and didn’t tell Elijah about it. Elijah doesn’t seem to care and removes his daylight ring to fully commit to her, after she accepts his proposal.

“The Originals” airs Wednesdays at 9pm on The CW.
