“The Originals” Episode Review: Friends, Lovers or Nothing

In a standout episode directed by Charles Michael Davis, “High Water and a Devil’s Daughter” saw Elijah cross the line to find a way to destroy the Hollow, while Freya hatches a plan of her own. Hope meets Marcel with surprising consequences.

Lots to talk about this week, but let’s start with the kiss that everyone’s talking about. Yes, Freya and Keelin are into each other and while their relationship keeps getting interrupted by Freya’s undying commitment to her family, it was still cool to see her finally realize her true desires. This also gives Freya a good anchor outside of her family, which is a new dimension for her and opens up a ton of story possibilities.

Another big shocker was Elijah straight up murdering four teenage witches to recreate the Harvest to try to win over the Ancestors to stop the Hollow. This was the pinnacle of Elijah’s turn down the dark path and it also led to Vincent telling Elijah that he has no soul, something you’d normally see directed at Klaus.

Klaus also seemed to agree to work with Marcel after Marcel saved Hope’s life and spared her from bloodshed. Again, the change in relationship and values between Klaus and Elijah is really working wonders for this season in terms of giving fans a new dynamic.

“High Water and a Devil’s Daughter” was one of the strongest episodes of season 4 to date, with tons of interesting new reversals and relationships for fans to chew on for the rest of the season. And on one last note, seeing as The CW is getting flack for killing all their gay characters, here’s hoping they’ve learned their lesson…

“The Originals” airs Fridays on The CW.
