“The Originals” Episode Review: Dawn Before Dark

“The Originals” returns for a truncated fourth season with “Gather Up the Killers,” in which Marcel faces a challenge in Alister Ducaine, an old enemy of Klaus’s who demands to finish him off. Hayley tracks down Keelin, the last werewolf she needs to save the Mikaelsons from certain death.

The unique decision to have season 4 pick up five years after the season 3 finale certainly helped this week’s episode. Marcel is now the undisputed king of New Orleans, complete with a fancy renovated penthouse, and all seems well in the French Quarter. Of course, because this is “The Originals,” that won’t last long. The new threat facing the city hasn’t fully been defined yet, aside from a vague stinger involving a circle, a missing child and seven-year-old Hope’s drawings, so this episode was really down to saving Elijah, Freya, Kol and Rebekah.

Hayley got some awesome moments to shine as she wolfed out and took down a fleet of nasty vampires. She managed to resurrect all of the Mikaelsons, although Kol and Rebekah were unseen, and shared a tender moment with Elijah in a practically cheer-inducing scene. Shout out to an awesome line from Freya: “You just melted that guy’s brain!” “That’s what happens when people annoy me.”

Other bits included Vincent crushing on a single mom, whose son was affected by… something. Keelin, the last werewolf of her pack, was introduced and Freya is keeping her around just in case, so we’ll definitely be seeing more of her. Also, cool sword that Ducaine gave to Marcel!

“Gather Up the Killers” was a fun back-to-basics premiere. While the season’s game plan isn’t explicitly spelled out yet, the truncated episode count means that this season should be more intense than most.

“The Originals” airs Fridays on The CW.
