“Runaways” Season 3 Debuts at NYCC, Read Our Spoiler Free Thoughts!

Marvel and Hulu’s Runaways took the stage of Madison Square Garden to debut to a crowd of adoring fans the premiere episode of the highly anticipated third season of the series, set to hit Hulu on December 13. OMFGTV witnessed the screening and has a LOT to say about the premiere, which starts the season on one of the best hours the show has ever put out so far.

While heavy duty spoilers are off limits, let’s just say that season 3 deals with the cliffhanger ending of season 2- in which Gert, Karolina and Chase were split up from the group and left in varying degrees of mortal peril- in a very exciting fashion that also brings in one of the most buzzed about additions to the Marvel Universe: Elizabeth Hurley as Morgan Le Fay. While Hurley’s appearance in the premiere is brief, it sets up quite a bit of meaty plot lines for the rest of the season and a certain connection to one of our heroes that’s bound to cause trouble.

One of the biggest complaints about the show from critics and fans alike is that the show focuses too much on the parents and not on the Runaways themselves. It seems the show runners have taken that to heart because season 3 seems to have found the perfect balance between Runaways and Pride. While the parents are certainly present in the action and actually have more drama to their plights this time around, the kids are front and center, rest assured.

Not to mention that this time out, the Runaways have new challenges to contend with that affect their character dynamics. Molly stands out here, as she must make a difficult decision with regards to her dedication to bringing down her own parents and Allegra Acosta delivers the dramatic goods here. She’s not the only character plagued by issues this season, although to say more would invite huge spoilers.

Other spoiler free impressions:

• Brittany Ishibashi deserves a ton of credit for playing the alien-inhabited Tina Minoru. She’s a total 180 from the Tina we know and Ishibashi totally kills it.

• Deanoru shippers are going to get one of the sweetest moments between the fan favorite pairing that the series has ever put out.

• Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said that Hulu executives said the premiere “looked like a movie” and they’re not wrong. There’s a ton of really cool and creative visual effects sequences here.

• After arriving late last season, Clarissa Thibeaux as Xavin will get a lot more to do this season.

• Fans of Gert and Old Lace’s relationship will also be very satisfied with how their connection plays out.

• Geoffrey and Catherine Wilder will return this season, but things aren’t looking good for the pair following their arrest last season.

The season 3 premiere of Runaways strikes every right chord- the audience in the screening was laughing, cheering and reacting with genuine investment in the proceedings. It’s a high point for the series thus far and hopefully, season 3 can only go up from here.

All 10 episodes of Runaways season 3 will premiere on Hulu December 13.
