This week on The Nevers, we get a breathtaking fight scene, lots of shifting allegiances and a gut punching ending you won’t see coming.

In “Ignition,” Mary prepares to sing to summon the Touched of London, while Amalia discovers more about the threats they face. Maladie makes an unlikely acquaintance and then, it happens…

Confronting Bonfire | Bonfire (Rochelle Neil) uses her fire powers to torch a carriage about to ship to the Beggar King (Nick Frost), when Amalia (Laura Donnelly) and Penance (Ann Skelly) armed with a homemade fire extinguisher try to recruit her to their cause, but the carriage was filled with opium, making Penance high as a kite when she tries to put out the fire, leading to Bonfire getting away.

Back at the orphanage, Cousens (Zackary Momoh) reveals that he and Amalia were romantically involved and he broke off their relationship without telling his wife. As Mary (Eleanor Tomlinson) serenades the orphans, a recovered Penance announces that she’s invented an amplifier to broadcast Mary’s singing voice to all the touched in London, but Mary says that since Maladie’s (Amy Manson) attack, she’s been unable to use her magic voice.

Alliances | As Swann (James Norton) leaves Augustus (Tom Riley) in charge of the Ferryman’s Club, Cousens is summoned by a man to a carriage where none other than Maladie is inside, who demands that he heal her bullet wound, which he does no questions asked. Mundi (Ben Chaplin) gets a message asking him to go to a bar, where Swann meets him and reveals that he was the one who ordered him to raid the orphanage.

While out on the town, Penance and Myrtle (Viola Prettejohn) find a flyer advertising the orphanage that they did not put up. Amalia goes to the address and finds a woman there along with a mechanical man, who Amalia destroys. She takes the woman to the orphanage to be interrogated by Desiree (Ella Smith), and she confesses that she drowned her pregnant daughter after finding out that she was touched. Amalia also finds a book of Touched people, which she takes to Lavinia (Olivia Williams) and informs her of what she found.

The Song | On her way to the park where Mary will perform her song through the amplifier, Amalia’s carriage is attacked by a thug who works for the Beggar King who can walk on water, which is bad when she is thrown into the lake. After a cool fight with Amalia underwater and the thug on top of it, she manages to get on top of the thug and strangle him to death.

Amalia makes it to the park where Mary sings her song and it gets amplified to the Touched in London- but then Mary is shot about ten times by the gunman from the opera. Mundi manages to kill him, but it’s too late to save Mary. Devastated, Amalia and company return to the orphanage, where Bonfire is waiting for them- with all the Touched of London, giving them a glimmer of hope.
