“Midnight, Texas” Exclusive: Showrunner Talks About Latest Episode’s Killer Reveal

“My entire life, I’ve been living with a murderer. I was too stupid to even know it.” – Creek

After Connor went searching for the missing girl in Midnight, Texas‘ latest episode, “Blinded By the Light,” he was hit in the head from behind. Was the culprit who gave the young Lovell a concussion even human, or was it a demon? Fiji’s recent hauntings from the demon they had thought they’d banished has begun to resurface, so could Midnight’s killer be supernatural?

According to Lemuel, the attack on Connor was downright sloppy — very human. Sure enough, after the powerful and wise vampire along with the town psychic, Manfred, returned to the scene of Connor’s attack, they not only found the missing girl, but also Daddy Lovell right over her body. Midnight’s serial killer has been caught red handed — right?

The gang’s interrogating tactics fail to work on Connor’s and Creek’s father, Shawn. Frustrated that they’re getting no information on his motive, Manfred goes to the Lovell home to see if any of his victims will give him a message.

The psychic enters the house and immediately hears screeches and screams. He heads towards the noise and discovers a shoe box hidden in a vent below the floor. In that box the psychic finds the Sons of Lucifer skull mask that appeared in his visions when Aubrey was being murdered, along with other keepsakes and mementos of its victims.

But here’s the twist — the box was found in Connor’s room. That’s right! All along while we suspected their dad, the Midnight murderer was Connor all along! This was later confirmed by the missing girl, who miraculously didn’t die at Connor’s hand.

So why was Shawn caught at the scene of the crime with the missing girl? He was trying to save her. It made him sick that his son described his hobby as being “fun.” Shawn tried to get help, but doctors wanted to put him away. And after losing his wife, he didn’t want to lose Connor as well.

So why were Connor’s victims targeted? “They weren’t exactly innocent,” he scoffs. He reveals to his sister that Aubrey, Bobo’s fiancée, was chosen because she was a White Supremacist; Tiffany, the other dead girl found earlier in the episode had to go because she was on the bus with the vampires that threatened their town.

Connor tries to justify his actions and claims he’s no different from everyone else in midnight. Creek explains that the Rev locks himself away during the full moon to make sure he doesn’t hurt anyone else, and as for Lem the vampire and Olivia the assassin, she tells him that they don’t hunt or kill for sport; they do it for justice to protect people.

With Creek’s life in danger, Joe flies to her rescue and shines his beam of Angel light to stop the truck from crashing. Connor flees, but doesn’t get too far. Lem catches up with him and swiftly snaps the young boy’s neck, instantly killing him.

“Blinded By the Light” was a very twisty episode, and we’re glad that the identity of the killer was revealed this season instead of being dragged on and on. That reveal had us shook!

OMFGTV hit up Midnight, Texas Showrunner & Executive Producer Monica Owusu-Breen for more information on that very revealing episode.

Fans familiar with the show’s source material, the book trilogy by Charlaine Harris, knew that Connor was the killer from the book series. When it came time to adapt the show for TV, the creative team opted not to change it up in regards to the killer’s identity and instead stay loyal to the book.

“It was such an amazing reveal in the book,” Owusu-Breen tells us. “It took my breath away when I read it. In my mind, it was a reveal that we HAD to build to. Not just for plot but also for our characters. We meet Creek, this confident girl next door who balances work, a secret boyfriend, an overprotective dad, and innocent brother.

“And in one episode her entire life comes crashing down around her. It shakes her to the core and for Creek — this is really the beginning of her story. Her entire life was based on a lie and now she’s got to figure out what’s next…”

In a previous episode, “Sexy Beast,” Lemuel was hopeful in helping the man-seducing, man-eating succubus Gina. He offered to take her under his wing — that is until Manfred incinerated her with a blow torch. So why was the vampire open to helping out the succubus, but quick to kill Connor?

“It was bold, and Lem’s choice was surprising — in it’s quickness and in it’s coldness,” she says about Connor’s quick kill. “Gina went after men who caused pain. That was a small mitigating factor for Lem. Lem told Gina the the rules of being a supernatural in their neck of the woods. But Gina wasn’t willing to abide by those rules. She didn’t want to change and stop killing.

“Lem heard the truth about Connor from his father. That Connor tortured and killed the vulnerable. Girls who wouldn’t be missed. Animals. Connor liked killing. And like Gina, Connor had no desire to change. In Lem’s mind — it was a necessary decision for the good of Midnight.”

Throughout the season, there have been carefully laid-out clues that Connor was the one at fault. Clues that when looking back will make you go, “Ahhh. That makes total sense now!” One we caught onto was also in the episode “Sexy Beast.” Not only was the 17-year-old at the Booby Trap — a topless bar where he saw Manfred — but he was also caught trying to sneak into the Cartoon Saloon! Either his hormones are really kicking into overdrive or he’s scouting for more victims.

Monica also reveals others you may have missed. “In the Pilot, it was Connor who called the police,” she says. “He was less shocked than everyone around him. He had no real emotional reaction, other than a disgusted observation that she’s bloated. The Succubus who went after men who caused pain went after Connor.

“We had Connor play curiosity around violence,” she adds. “He was never as scared as you’d expect. Also Creek’s dad’s reaction to Manfred. He didn’t want a man who could talk to the dead anywhere NEAR his family.”

Speaking of Creek’s dad, when she went to confront him, she blamed him for making her complicit in what her young brother did. He chose to be a father to Connor and to protect and to protect all the evil things that he did. And it looks like the two have parted ways, but we have not yet seen the last of him.

“Creek is devastated,” Monica says. “And her father knows — he’s to blame. He will try to make amends in a surprising way.”

What we have seen the last of, however, is the gang that has been taunting, tormenting and threatening Bobo the entire season. “Lem and Bobo decimated the local branch of the Son’s of Lucifer,” she says. “So for this season, the threat of Sons of Lucifer is over. There are far greater threats about to descend this season…”
