Heroes resident mind reader Matt Parkman returns to the NBC powerful drama this fall. We spoke with his portrayer, Greg Grunberg, this past summer, where he talks reprising his dream role and what he’s excited for the fans to see.
“[He’s] my favorite role that I’ve ever played,” Grunberg tells OMFGTV. I’m really, really excited to get a second chance at it and see where he is five years in the future.”
In the original series’ first season, an episode titled “Five Years Gone” revealed a very different Matt Parkman. Grunberg explains that while his character in that episode was a “bad-ass,” that in the new series, he’s not quite there yet, adding, “My character’s doing things that are unexpected, and hopefully in the future episodes it’ll be justified as to why he’s doing what he’s doing, why he’s working for who he’s working for.”
Grunberg, whose past television credits include Criminal Minds, Hawaii 5-0 and Masters of Sex, shares that he’s very happy with the direction and journey his character is headed, and is looking forward to seeing how everything plays out.
“I wanted to go dark,” he says. “He’s a character everybody loves so much, why would he be doing what he’s doing? Hopefully the justification of that will be really interesting. I don’t know how dark or if I’m really going dark yet, but [Matt’s] being tempted by that, which is good.”
As for whether or not the limited event series will continue beyond the season, Grunberg remains hopeful.
“This stuff is like Heroes on steroids. We’re taking it to another level. If this show does well, NBC is not going to make the same mistake twice. I really doubt it.”
Heroes Reborn airs Thursdays at 8pm on NBC.
