“Motherland: Fort Salem’s” Gripping & Tantalizing Season 3 Premiere Conjures Up Storm and Fury Like Never Before

Review of Episode “Homo Cantus”

After almost a year of enthralling anticipation, the wait for Motherland: Fort Salem’s third and final season with Freeform is coming to a close. On Tuesday, June 21st, the bewitching drama series will bless our screens once more with its Season 3 premiere episode, “Homo Cantus”. PopWire was fortunate enough to preview Episode 301 and the verdict is in, Switches: Be prepared for storm and fury like you’ve never seen before.

Without fail, creator and executive producer Eliot Laurence and the Motherland cast and crew is providing viewers a cinematic masterpiece as we’re thrown into the dark trenches of the Great War to fight alongside Abigail Bellweather (Ashley Nicole Williams), Raelle Collar (Taylor Hickson), Tally Craven (Jessica Sutton), Scylla Ramshorn (Amalia Holm), and other fan favorites. The supernatural show takes us on a harrowing journey, sowing the seeds of witch history and exploring territories not seen before in Motherland’s alternate world; thus, introducing the threesome and audiences to new faces and greater obstacles as the Unit navigates the dangers of life on the run and the battle against witches’ ancient enemy, the Camarilla.

At the end of Motherland’s sophomore season, the beloved Bellweather Unit, together with Spree leader Nicte Batan (Arlen Aguayo-Stewart), escaped federal custody, becoming fugitives wanted for the murder of Vice President Blanton Silver’s (Victor Webster) daughter, Cadet Penelope Silver (Mellany Barros). Now, we find Abigail, Tally, and Raelle living the nomadic lifestyle of Dodgers as General Petra Bellweather (Catherine Lough Haggquist) and Captain Anacostia Quartermain (Demetria McKinney) implement a plan to prove their innocence.

Season 3 inevitably follows the Camarillan witch plague’s destruction of Fort Salem’s resident Army. As if fighting an ever-evolving attempt at witch genocide isn’t daunting enough, Abigail, Raelle, and Tally face another battle — the internal, lasting impact of war and death on the mental health of surviving soldiers. Relationships are also tested as exhaustion, fear, and uncertainty looms over the young witches like a low-pressure system brewing above. Alas, “Raylla” stans, rejoice! As the Motherland teasers have shared, Raelle and girlfriend Scylla are making up for lost time as Hickson and Holm serve some serious heat with their palpable onscreen chemistry.

A gripping debut of Season 3, “Homo Cantus” delivers a tantalizing glimpse of the past and what may lie in the storm ahead that will certainly leave viewers with more questions than answers and an insatiable hunger for more. “Let us begin.”
