“The Magicians” Recap: Of Course Whales Have Magic

The second episode of The Magicians double feature on SYFY was just as exciting as the first! The gang is stuck in a time loop, but only Eliot and Margo are aware of it so it’s up to them to save the world. ‘Oops!…I Did It Again’ was written by Hillary Benefiel and directed by John Scott.

Time Loop | It’s hours before chunks of moon begin to hit the Earth, 12 hours in fact. Josh (Trevor Einhorn) is busy stress cooking. Margo (Summer Bishil) and Eliot (Hale Appleman) are discussing their situation, Margo is nervous and wants some emergency codewords with her best friend. Eliot is already prepared and spouts off a list of words and their meanings. Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) is freaking out and Julia (Stella Maeve) is calming her. Kady (Jade Tailor) comes bursting through the front door and says there’s chaos outside. But she’s here because she has a plan. She’s reworked Richard’s reverse entropy spell and has hedges on stand-by all over the world to cast it together. Plus, a surge will magic surge will probably happen within the net 12 hours, they can do this!

Or not. The surge happens less than five minutes before 10pm, and Kady gives the signal for everyone, including all the hedges, to cast the spell. But it doesn’t work, they fail and the world ends.

Or does it? Margo and Eliot wake up in the middle of their convo from 12 hours prior, and everything they’ve already lived seems to be happening again. They realize they’re in a time loop and they’re the only ones aware of it! They catch the rest of the group up on what’s happening and come up with another plan to save the world, only that plan doesn’t work. They go through dozens of loops, trying different things to save the world, but nothing works. The time loops just keep restarting.

During this time Eliot is still hearing the voice in his head, seeing the words Let Me Out scrawled places, and it has now progressed to him also seeing a door.

Margo eventually gets a lead that’s at lifeguard station 17 on Fisher Beach, she goes to investigate alone because Eliot is too busy self-medicating. The next time the loop restarts, Margo is no longer aware of what’s happening. Eliot has to figure this thing out on his own now.

Eliot decides to confide in Josh about all that is going on, including The Monster maybe still being in his head, just behind the door he keeps seeing. Josh suggests he opens the door and facing what’s behind it.

The next time the time loop restarts Eliot does just that, but instead of The Monster coming out from behind the door, Charlton (Spencer Daniels) pops out. He’s been hanging out in Eliot’s happy place in his head, but after having Moon Brain Charlton was able to make his way into Eliot’s consciousness. So he’s basically Eliot’s imaginary friend since only he can see Charlton. Charlton has seen everything that’s been going on and thinks Margo lost her awareness because she got close to the answer that day she went to the beach. So off to Fisher Beach they go.

When they find lifeguard station 17 they see a telephone wire going from the ocean into the station, so they go inside to investigate. They see the wire is connected to a tv, Eliot turns it on and is able to talk to whales. Yes, whales. Whales who have magic and are controlling the lime loops. When the chunks of moon hit the earth it breaks sigils on the ocean floor keeping the Kraken down, which triggers a failsafe ancient whales placed on it that sends the world back 12 hours to prevent it from happening.

On the next reset Eliot fills the group in on what the whales told him and they brainstorm. They need the kraken to be released earlier to trigger the time loop to begin before the heist for the moon rock.

On the next loop reset Eliot tries to do just that. He goes back to the beach and pleads with the whales to please release the kraken, and they actually do it.

This time the loop restarts at the beginning of the heist. Eliot gives Margo one of their safe words and she immediately does what he says without question. At the standoff against Marina (Kacey Rohl) Eliot creates a distraction and Margo punches Marina out, which Kady is definitely proud of her for. This opens the door for Eliot, Alice, and Julia to perform the ritual to communicate with the moon. It works, her aura turns green and they ask her to move and she does. They save the day! Finally!

Later that night the group celebrates their win. There’s a knock on the door and Julia answers. It’s Todd (Adam DiMarco), and he tells her he’s been bestowed a quest by that sexist pig that visited her. As she’s telling Todd that he has nothing to worry about because they saved Earth he interrupts her. This quest is about saving Fillory. So Julia spent all that time and energy saving the wrong world. Fu**. They’re not done.
