“The Magicians” Recap: Mummy’s Help

We are just about halfway through SYFY’s The Magicians fourth season and so far it has been incredible! The most recent episode, ‘A Timeline and a Place’ sees our favorite magicians all split up and working on separate things all over their world and others. The episode was written by Christina Strain and directed by James Conway, and here is what went down!

Talk with Yourself | Penny23 (Arjun Gupta) and Marina23 (Kacey Rohl) were previously kidnapped and now we see where they’ve been taken. It turns out them being in timeline 40 really messes up some time magic, so this guy wants to send them back to their original timeline to fix the problems they’ve caused. Problem is, once he’s done that Penny and Marina tell him there’s no magic in timeline 23 so they’ve going to have to be clever to fix the device that brought them. They decide to head to the guys house in this timeline and are greeted by his mother, who it turns out is the creator of this time magic, horomancy. The mom is having her brains scrambled as a result of the years of horomancy she’s done, and Penny and Marina being in the wrong timelines is messing up her spells that keep her mind right. They realize they guy wants them back in their original timeline to save his mom. Penny and Marina steal the timeline hopping device and a few notebooks from the lab and travel out of there. Once in a safe area they try to fix the device and fight over it, zapping Penny away.

Penny23 comes face-to-face with Penny40, who saw he was jumping timelines and needed to talk to him. Penny40 tells Penny23 that he needs to go back to timeline 40, there’s something he needs to do there. He also tells Penny23 to tell Kady that he loves her, which is sweet and heartbreaking. I have to say, watching Arjun play both Penny’s chatting with each other was a delight! He has the nuances of both personalities down!

When Penny23 returns back to Marina, he knows what to do. He spreads dandelion seeds from another timeline to this one, ensuring it will be impossible to clean, then he and Marina bounce.

I also want to point out that Marina mentioned multiple times throughout the episode that she has a girlfriend back in timeline 40 that she has to get back to, yay!

Modesto | Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) moves to Modesto and rents a room from a woman named Sheila (Camryn Manheim). Alice believes she’s here for a reason, and it’s not long before she finds out why. She follows Sheila outside and sees her use magic to find a buried lockbox filled with cash to donate to a girl who needed cancer treatment. Alice confronts Sheila and tells her that she’s a magician, and Sheila is initially shocked then excited. Some local Librarians visit Sheila, but the woman gets them to leave without mentioning Alice. Later, Sheila mentions that the tap water is unsafe to drink due to old lead pipes and wants to know if they can fix it? Alice says yes, but they’d need more ambient magic. Sheila can feel that there’s a magic pipe with a leak and directs Alice to it. Alice pries the leak open and spills ambient magic out into Modesto.

The local hedge witches take notice and use the opportunity to blow the Modesto branch of The Library up.

Sheila goes home early while Alice watches kids play in the newly cleaned water, at home Sheila is greeted by Gavin (Daniel Nemes) and another Librarian. Uh-oh.

Take Care of His Body | Quentin (Jason Ralph) and Julia (Stella Maeve) are working on translating Egyptian hieroglyphs to locate the remaining parts of the Monster’s (Hale Appleman) body, but they’re struggling to translate some of it. They go to a basement filled with ancient Egyptian artifacts and the Monster [who is VERY drunk] thinks they need the help from someone who was alive during the tie of hieroglyphs, so he brings a mummy to life. The mummy is extremely helpful and gives them the information they need, then they leave him. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to know what happened with the mummy!

Later, Q finds the Monster trying to take some of Eliot’s old pills to get high and he loses it. He tells the Monster to take care of Eliot’s body otherwise they will stop trying to help him put his body together. The Monster eventually complies and promises to take better care of “the meat suit.”

Beets | In Fillory, all the talking animals have gone mute and the only way to get them talking again is to make a deal with Lady Pike (Miranda Frigon) for her beets. Margo (Summer Bishil) meets with Lady Pike and initially it does not go well and Lady Pike says she’s selling her beets to West Loria. Josh (Trevor Einhorn) decides a feast between the ladies could break the tension and get Margo the beets. Josh is in Margo’s ear helping her win over Lady Pike, which included drinking curdled alpaca milk, and the Lady does have a change of heart towards Margo. Unfortunately she has already promised the beets to West Loria and doesn’t want to go back on her word. Margo, furious, steps aside and talks to Josh who tells her she’s out Elioting Eliot and the sets Margo off. She doesn’t want to be Eliot, she is badass High King Margo. So she goes out with a giant knife and stabs it into the table in front of Lady Pike and demands the beets, to which the Lady agreed.

She later goes off on Josh about comparing her to Eliot, but he comes back at her and said he was just trying to be nice and become her boyfriend.
