“The Magicians” Recap: New Love?

Last week on The Magicians we saw Margo and Josh help the Monster take out Bacchus, this week we will see Margo and Josh working together in a different way. Quentin has to deal with his father’s death, and Alice finds a familiar face to work with. ‘Marry Fuck Kill’ was written by Henry Alonso Myers and directed by John Scott, and here’s what happened!

God Worshipper | Penny23 (Arjun Gupta) and Julia (Stella Maeve) travel to Fillory to try to find out some info on what the Monster (Hale Appleman) pulled out of Bacchus, but instead they find a follower of Bacchus about to kill herself. Julia and Penny get her talking and convince her to perform a ceremony on Julia to tell her more about her Power, if she even still has any. The ceremony must be done by someone who is utterly devoted to the person, so Penny23 steps up since he loved Julia23. I personally think Kady should have been the one to do it, but I understand why it was Penny. After the ceremony it is revealed that Julia truly is some sort of God, so the follower Shoshana (Jolene Purdy) decides to now worship Julia.

Familiar Face | Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) finds help in the most unlikely of allies, Christopher Plover (Charles Shaughnessy). He knows where the revision room is, and how to steal the books and curse them to write different stories so as to not tip the Library off with their whereabouts. In exchange, Alice reluctantly agrees to help Plover find a world where he can live in peace. When Alice reads the books she stole, she realizes Quentin (Jason Ralph) will die in just a few days.

Broken Planes | Q has to go to his father’s funeral and pack his dads things up, all with the Monster tagging along. The Monster doesn’t understand the way Quentin is processing his grief and watches for a while, until he becomes bored. Then he convinces Q that breaking his dads model airplanes would help make him feel better. Eventually, he tells Quentin that Eliot is no longer alive inside of him, that he felt the moment his soul died. But that’s not true, because we see Eliot trapped inside of his own mind, unaware of what’s happening in the real world.

Lupine Love | The Quickening is upon him, and Josh (Trevor Einhorn) is freaking out. He’s having crazy nightmares and wakes up with a dead animal in his bed. He finds out from a Brakebills professor that he must either kill someone or sleep with an uninfected person before the Quickening ends or he will end up killing himself. Margo (Summer Bishil) vows to help him, and together they steal a komodo dragon from Kanye West so they can cut out its heart for a spell to end the Quickening. Unfortunately the spell doesn’t work and Josh has to jump out of a moving car to avoid attacking Margo. When Josh gives up and realizes he’s just going to have to lock himself in a cage until he kills himself, Margo steps up and does the unthinkable. She gives him consent to sleep with her, ensuring he doesn’t rape or kill anyone. This means she will become infected, but the Quickening only happens every 30 years, so she’s got time to figure something out. But now Margo and Josh cannot sleep with anyone not infected unless they want to spread the “disease.”

What a crazy episode! Who would have thought that Josh and Margo would become a thing?!?
