Things got pretty insane on the third season’s penultimate episode of Syfy’s The Magicians! The Best Bitches are reunited and Fillory has its first election! ‘The Fillorian Candidate’ was written by David Reed and Noga Landau, and directed by Joshua Butler.
Penny 23 | Penny 23 (Arjun Gupta) is now a resident of timeline 40, but no one prepared poor Kady (Jade Tailor) for his appearance. She’s heartbroken once again once she realizes this is not her Penny, but does talk to him and opens up about what Reynard (Mackenzie Astin) did to Julia (Stella Maeve). Penny had spied on Alice (Olivia Taylor-Dudley) in the library so they all know they need to find a god to ask about the castle at the end of the world, and they also know about the siphon plan, but she eventually gives that over to Quentin (Jason Ralph).

Penny 23 realizes they need to find Reynard to ask him about the castle, and Kady is not thrilled. They go to Julia, who is becoming more and more god-like, and she agrees to go with them. She takes them to Reynard, who is living as a mortal delivering pizzas, and get the info out of him. But he doesn’t give it up easily, he pulls a gun on them that contains their god-killing bullet. They take the bullet hoping it’ll kill whatever is locked in the castle.
Long Live the King | Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil) really want the 6th key from the Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne), so they use Frey (Madeleine Arthur) to get in contact with her. The Queen says she will only give them the key if they get Fillory back and can give them their own bit of land where they won’t be bothered. The pair decides they need to have an election in Fillory, so with Josh’s (Trevor Einhorn) help they strong-arm Tick () into holding the first democratic election in Fillory. Eliot pulls a dick move and decides Margo’s name should not be on the ballot because the people of Fillory are used to a patriarchy, then goes back and forth with Tick promising all sorts of ridiculous things. In the end, it was Margo’s kindness to the talking animals that won her the vote by write-ins.
The Fairy Queen upholds her end of the bargain and gives Margo the 6th key, along with a gift. She replaces the eye she took from Margo with a fairy eye disguised as a human one, allowing her to see all kinds of things she couldn’t before.
Replaced | Throughout the episode Kady has been trying to reach her Penny using the key that connects them all, and it finally seems to work at the end of the episode! Only, the key has replaced her Penny with Penny 23. Ouch!
