“The Magicians” Recap: Julia’s Unlikely Ally

Syfy’s The Magicians got bloody on the most recent episode, ‘The Art of the Deal.’ Josh goes back to Fillory, Julia continues to help the fairies, and Eliot and Margo try to prevent a war. The revenge ladened episode was written by Christina Strain and directed by Rebecca Johnson.

Back to Fillory | After arguing about the quest, Quentin (Jason Ralph), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), and Josh (Trevor Einhorn) return to Fillory in search of the sixth key. They meet up with Margo (Summer Bishil) and Eliot (Hale Appleman) where they are all informed that both Loria and the Floaters have declared war on Fillory. Although they have been deposed by their people, Eliot and Margo still care about their kingdom and hang back to defend it (by trying their best to persuade the leaders that have declared war on Fillory that they really don’t want to do that).

Q, Alice, and Josh look for the key alone, and they think they’ve found where it’s located, they just have to reflect 2 different moons light off some glass to reveal it, no biggie.

After not being able to reveal the key they all get testy, Josh smokes a joint while Q and Alice argue about her intentions with the quest and Library. Suddenly, Josh exclaims that he knows where the key is! Did the weed help him see it in another realm?

The Underworld | Penny (Arjun Gupta) is chained and working for the Library in the Underworld, and he is not happy about it. He is especially mad at Sylvia (Roan Curtis) for turning him in, but once she explains why he begins to understand, and he finds out that there are other places beyond the Underworld. He meets Hades, THE Hades (Michael Luwoye) and finds out he has a great destiny ahead of him, he just has to embrace all the Library has to offer, so that’s what he does.

The Slaughter | Julia (Stella Maeve) and the newly emoji-fluent Fen (Brittany Curran) are still set on saving Skye (Anja Savcic) and the other fairies being enslaved. Julia somehow convinces the Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne) to pretend to be a hostage so they can save the others, but things go horribly wrong when Fen witnesses one fairy being beheaded. After Julia begs and Skye gets treated horribly, the Fairy Queen decides to break the fairy deal that is keeping the anti-magic necklaces working and the fairies are suddenly free to exact their vengeance on the family that has hurt them and their kind for centuries.

After, the queen thanks Julia for caring about her kind and reveals that she knows where one key is, but she cannot give it to her. It is what holds up the Fairy Realm, without it the realm would collapse. So maybe Josh did see the key after smoking that joint!!!
