“The Magicians” Recap: Demons Love Chocolate

It’s only the third episode of the season and Syfy’s The Magicians has already killed a major character! Though we shouldn’t be too surprised, it was the third episode of last season when Alice died. Other than losing Penny, this episode also includes pirates and finally reveals what Alice did to the Lamprey to piss it off so badly. ‘The Losses of Magic’ was written by Henry Alonso Myers and directed by James L. Conway.

Saran Wrap Party | Though Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) has been alive for months, she’s finally going to see her parents. Quintin (Jason Ralph) already alerted them that she was alive, so her mother is furious with her for not coming by to see them sooner. But there’s a bigger reason for Alice being at her parents, she’s still on the run from the Lamprey. We know Quintin has it inside him, but Alice doesn’t, so when he arrives at her parents house she’s pissed he showed up but lets him help. Eventually the Lamprey leaves Q and finds another host, but no one knows who. Alice knows Lamprey’s can get inside you anywhere your skin is showing, so she covers all her exposed skin [minus her face] with saran wrap, and Quentin does the same.

Alice eventually reveals what she did to the Lamprey’s family, and it’s not good. As a Niffin she killed every one of its family members by experimenting on them and watching the colors they put off when they died. Now it wants to exact its revenge on her. And in a sense it does.

The Lamprey has inhabited her father, and the only way to get it out of him is to give him a strong electric shock, but the Lamprey reveals her father has a weak heart and wouldn’t survive the shock. They zap him anyway, forcing the Lamprey out of her father’s body so they could directly zap it. We finally see the Lamprey and it looks like a Lachrymose Leech, with rows of sharp teeth inside a big mouth. After killing the Lamprey we see Alice’s father has survived the zap, but soon after he has a heart attack that takes his life.

Pirate King | Aboard the Muntjac, things get hairy when pirates show up on the horizon. When they board the ship, Eliot (Hale Appleman), Fen (Brittany Curran), and Fray (Madeleine Arthur) hide below decks. Eliot hopes the magic key he has can be of some hope, and it can! It creates a door where there wasn’t one, allowing Eliot and his family to escape the ship, not to be seen for the rest of the episode.

Margo (Summer Bishil) learns of the pirates aboard the Muntjac and pleads with the Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne) to let her go take care of the problem. The Queen agrees, but decides to tag along as well.

Once on board, Margo has Tick (Rizwan Manji) steal her eye back from the Queen to stop that form of spying. Margo meets the Pirate King and is pleasantly surprised when the king turns out to be a super hot lady pirate, the sexual tension between the two is ridiculous! The Pirate King is all for making nice with Margo, but only if she will allow the Muntjac to mate with the pirates boat. Margo goes to the heart of the ship and has an honest chat with the boat, she doesn’t want to force any kind of sexual endeavors onto the boat if she does not consent to it. The Fairy Queen hears this conversation and is impressed by Margo’s leadership and decides to take care of the pirates herself, i.e. kill them all and take all their teeth. She then demands Margo return her eye, but instead Margo crushes it in a fist, insuring an end to that type of spying from the Queen.

Summoning A Demon | The Best Bitches are reunited and back in action! Kady (Jade Tailor) has one of Mayakovsky’s batteries and is ready to use it to try to save Penny (Arjun Gupta) from his super cancer. In order to do that, she and Julia (Stella Maeve) need to summon a particular type of demon. In order to summon the demon they need to put out chocolate, because apparently this demon love chocolate. The demon arrives and is much more pleasant than one would think a demon would be, then gets to work. He needs to remove the cancer from Penny’s body, so he inserts his fingers inside Penny’s abdomen and begins his cancer search. Penny, in immense pain, astrally projects himself out of his body and across the room to avoid hurting. Only something bad happens while Penny is out of his body…he dies. Or his body does, and he is stuck on the astral plane.

What an INSANE episode! With two deaths, it’s definitely one of the more emotional episodes of the series so far! What will Kady do without Penny? Will Penny always be trapped or will he find a way back to his body and bring it back to life?

The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
