This weeks episode of Syfy’s The Magicians has one of the coolest intros of the series! Quentin (Jason Ralph) narrates the first chapter of The Tale of the Seven Keys, which sets the tone of the episode and introduces their first task to them. ‘Heroes and Morons’ was written by John McNamara and directed by Chris Fisher.
Mayakovsky’s Batteries | Quentin, Julia (Stella Maeve), and Josh (Trevor Einhorn) realize they need to find at least one of Mayakovsky’s (Brian F. O’Byrne) batteries to try to restore magic. They get in touch with Kady (Jade Tailor) and use the possibility of healing Penny (Arjun Gupta) to bribe her into helping. They find a video of a bear at a Hedge bar and need Kady’s help getting info from the bartender. This leads them to Emily Greenstreet (Abby Miller), the old Brakebills student who had an affair with Mayakovsky. She tells the gang the two of them got married since he was “free of the bond” and could leave Brakebills South. They eventually ended up at the hedge bar and he somehow got turned into a bear, Emily thinks it was a woman they met at the bar whom he owed something to.
There are rumors of magic happening all over the city, Kady and Josh go to investigate a dinosaur that’s been made, while Q and Julia investigate an almost orgy going down in a park. Q realizes whoever’s done this is going to try to jump off a nearby building and rushes to stop….their old Professor Lipson (Keegan Connor Tracy)! Q saves her but not the battery, but he does realize she wasn’t the one who turned Mayakovsky into a bear, which means it was Emily who did it! But by the time they get to her they realize they’re too late, Kady has already been by, did a little kickey-punchy stuff, and left with the battery.

The First Key | Fillory is broke and it’s up to the High King Eliot (Hale Appleman) to fix that, and in order to fix it he must restore magic. He buys the Muntjac, a ship with quite the personality, in order to sail around the realm collecting the seven keys they need to restore magic. He tells his people he’s sailing to an old island to collect taxes, but that was just a ruse to trick the Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne), he’s really going to find the first key. But the Queen still doesn’t trust him and places someone who she trusts to go with them, Fray (Madeleine Arthur), their daughter. Time is different in the Fairy Realm, so she is now a teenager.
Eliot does find the key, but getting it isn’t as easy as he’d hoped. The Priest has it, but swears he needs it to protect their people from a shadow bat that has begun attacking them. Frey is smart and realizes the Priest has been deceiving his people, he has been using the keys magic to conjure the shadow bat and then killing those who don’t flee in time. Eliot takes the key and leaves the island’s people to deal with their priest.
The Alarm Works | Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) follows the vampires instructions and gets herself an early alarm system to warn her of the Lamprey. That alarm happens to be a very young kitten. Alice is very smart and has realized there’s got to be more than one Mayakovsky battery, so she’s on the hunt for one of her own. But after not being able to save the one Professor Lipson dropped, she goes back to the police station with everyone else. This is where shit gets crazy and sad, her early warning system kitty worked alright, when something, possibly the Lamprey, got close to her the kitty exploded! She’s going to need another kitty.
Keep watching to see what’s going to happen with Mayakovsky’s battery, the Fairy problem in Fillory, and to see if Alice gets a new kitten!
The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
