“The Magicians” Recap: Follow the Signs
It’s time to plan a royal wedding to secure the truce between Fillory and Loria on The Magicians. The planning has a few hiccups involving betrayal, a fairy deal, and the complicated menu but Eliot is determined. Penny starts his new job as overdue book bounty hunter with Kady’s help while Quentin and Julia turn to an unexpected source for information. “The Girl Who Told Time” was written by Noga Landau and Henry Alonso Myers and directed by Joshua Butler. Here is what went down.
DIFFERENT TIME, DIFFERENT ALICE | The Dean (Rick Worthy) officially frees Julia (Stella Maeve) from the magic-free prison Kady (Jade Tailor) locked her in, hoping that Julia will continue to look for answers to her shade problem. In Fillory, Quentin (Jason Ralph) self-medicates to get over the pain of losing Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) again until Margo (Summer Bishil) has had enough of his moping and sends him to Earth to run errands. At Brakebills, he finds Josh (guest star Trevor Einhorn) in the middle of a Baked Sale full of magical hallucinogenic goodies that he is all too happy to share with Quentin. Quentin takes a trip (pun intended) to another universe in his mind where his fun time is interrupted by a young girl who looks just like Julia. She tells him that is because she is Julia, or at least Julia’s shade and she is lost and trying to get back. Quentin shows up at Julia’s door and only by telling her about his shade vision is he able to get her to open the door. They do research themselves and it takes them to the Dean who does happen to know someone who might have information on shades. The only problem is, it’s Alice. And not OUR Alice, but rather Alice from the 23rd timeline in Jane Chatwins terrible Groundhog’s Day experiment. Julia suggests a Teslaflection, a type of spell that would let them bridge the gap between universes and allow Quentin to get the information he needs from Alice. As long as he gets out in under two minutes and doesn’t touch anything, they just might pull it off without blowing up the universe. Other universe Alice has been deeply affected by watching the deaths of all her friends and it shows. She tells Quentin they need to find the gatekeeper to allow them to pass into the Underworld but unfortunately she hasn’t been able to find them herself yet. Julia and Quentin continue their research, now for this ancient gatekeeper and Julia is the one to uncover it. Spoiler alert: It’s a freaking dragon.

LATE FEES | Penny (Arjun Gupta) has officially been called into work as his application to the librarians’ order has been approved. While he is being read in, Kady asks about any books on how to kill a god but the librarian on duty tells her no such books exist. Once Penny is made a member, he enlists Kady to help him on his first errand, running down an overdue book. It takes them to FuzzBeat, an online clickbait hub run by a woman named Harriet (guest star Marlee Matlin). She is deaf but Kady can sign so she and Harriet discuss the book while Penny broods off to the side. She tells Kady that the site itself is encoded spells for magicians (actually go to the site, the show covers its bases). While Harriet is looking for the book, Kady laments about how the library didn’t have the information she was looking for. Harriet finds the book and before handing it off to Penny, tells Kady that there is no such thing as knowledge the library doesn’t have. Back at the library, Penny turns the book over to the librarian on duty but when he stamps the card, it releases a poison that controls his body, causing him to try to unlock an ominous looking door. To stop himself, the librarian hits the aptly named “kill switch” that releases another poison, this one killing him. Penny is understandably freaked out and the head librarian (guest star Mageina Tovah) fills him in that the room in question is called the Poison Room and it contains the universe’s most dangerous knowledge. Penny and Kady go back to FuzzBeat to confront Harriet about the poison but when they get there the entire place has been cleared out. The only thing left is a card addressed to Kady telling her that the knowledge she seeks is hidden in the Poison Room.
GROOMZILLA | Preparations for Eliot’s (Hale Appleman) second royal wedding are underway and he is being as big of a diva as one would expect from Eliot. He has been paying Baylor (guest star Rhys Ward) regular visits with the gifts of backgammon and nachos and it seems like Baylor may be coming over to his side. Eliot still worries about his low approval rating among the people and decides to take Baylor’s advice and make the wedding more of a public event. After being brought to Fillory to act as royal chef, Josh discovers that Baylor was passing messages to the Foo Fighters using his dirty dishes. Instead of executing him, Eilot and Margo use a locator spell on the note to learn the whereabouts of the Foo Fighters’ camp. Then, they have Josh cook up a love potion of sorts to slip into the camp’s food, resulting in all of them being firmly on Team Eliot from here on out. Even with all the wedding plans, it doesn’t escape Eliot’s notice that Fen (Brittany Curran) seems to have more on her mind than usual, catching her staring off into nothing and being extra jumpy. When he asks her about it she blames morning sickness but he worries there is something more so he asks Margo to talk to her. Margo has been seeing visions of the fairies just like Fen and at first Fen is delighted when she realizes she isn’t alone. That delight turns to horror when Margo tells her the truth about the deal she made for Fen’s baby. She runs to find Eliot but encounters a fairy instead who grabs her and disappears them both.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
• Line of the Night goes to Quentin for, “Not cool. Those grapes died for nothing now.”
• Nate Silver is a magician. That is canon now.
• Petition for a miniseries following The Dean’s “dark artistic rivalry” with Bob Ross.
So what did you think? Where does one go to find an ancient dragon? What other books are hidden in the Poison Room? Will they be able to make an alternative deal in exchange for Eliot and Fen’s baby? Let us know your theories in the comments below!
