“The Magicians” Recap: Margo’s Eleven

If you love fantasy and you love heist movies, look no further than this week’s episode of The Magicians. Faced with the immediate need for funds, the whole magical crew comes together to put their differences aside and rob a bank. “Plan B” was written by Christina Strain and directed by Chris Fisher. Here is what went down.

EVERYONE NEEDS A PAYDAY | Julia (Stella Maeve) and Kady (Jade Tailor) visit two women who work as butchers as per the instruction of Kady’s contact. The women determine that Julia needs a straight up exorcism to truly be rid of the demon fetus and while one seems more ready to kill Julia and call it a day, the other agrees to perform it for the modest price of one million dollars (in gold bars of course). The girls joke that they would have to rob a bank but then realize that they are magicians and awesome so why not? They case the bank and discover it is covered in wards and they are going to need help. Before they get any further, an invisible goblin thing attacks Julia and noble valiant Haxy saves her but not before taking a fatal wooden spoon to the gut. They take shelter at Brakebills until they can figure out what to do next. In Fillory, Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil) are facing their own financial woes now that they are also trying to fund a war in addition to fixing the Wellspring so when the chance to rob a bank comes to them, they are all too happy to join the fun. Kady even manages to get Penny (Arjun Gupta) in on the plan after a reunion romp in the stacks even though he is less than pleased when he finds out it is to help Julia. They plan their heist under the leadership of Margo who has (of course) robbed a bank before. After another encounter with another invisible goblin, Kady confronts the butchers and they cop to knowing what is coming after Julia. Much to Kady’s dismay, they can’t call them off and will just have to get the money for the exorcism before the never-ending cycle of goblins manage to kill Julia. Kady breaks the news to Julia that she is benched for the heist but reminds her that they are “Best Bitches” so Julia can use their necklaces to watch from home while she works on her homemade mini time machine.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE NIFFIN BOX | Quentin (Jason Ralph) hasn’t told anyone that Niffin Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) is back and doing her best irritating sibling, “I’m not touching you” routine to pester him into letting her out of his back tattoo. He tries to convince her that he can reverse the niffin process and help her but not only does she not believe him, she doesn’t want to be helps. He is still working on solving the niffin problem when Kady and Julia arrive at the Physical Kids’ Cottage to hide out and recruit them all. Kady fills Quentin in on all that has happened to Julia and he goes to talk to her in Alice’s room. Niffin Alice is ready to rip Julia a new one until she hears the words “rob a bank” and she practically pees herself with excitement.

THE HEIST | The night before the heist, the team prepares by getting the fingerprints of two of the managers by getting them to stick said finger in their mouths (or other places with Quentin). The next day they set their plan in motion by releasing hundreds of bees into the bank, causing an evacuation. Then Eliot, Kady, and Quentin runway waltz in posing as exterminators, loop the cameras, and send the bees packing. They use their new fingerprints to turn off the wards and give Penny the green light to poof into the vault. Because the bank is magician proof, Penny has to wear a homemade gravity belt to keep from touching the floor but the gold bars he is loading up on weigh him down causing his toe to brush the floor. Stuck in the vault and running out of air, he incepts Eliot’s brain to alert them and they head back in to figure out a way to break him out. They are running out of time before the wards come back on and have no way to open the vault so Niffin Alice sees her chance to make a deal. She can get the vault open but in exchange, she wants control of Quentin’s body for an hour a day. He bargains down to half an hour but agrees and she gets to work while he fakes doing the math himself so as not to alert the others. They get the vault open just in time for the wards to go back online and Quentin to trip the alarm, alerting a battle magician who grabs an electric whip and heads their way. Julia sees all this going down in the mirror and grabs her newly completed time machine and books it to the alley where Margo is waiting. Inside the vault, they find themselves suddenly back fifteen seconds and Kady immediately realizes it must be Julia and confirms it through their necklaces. Julia tells them they only have five rewinds to get out of there. They keep dying at the battle magician’s hand until they reach their last rewind where Eliot dives in the way and has his chest slashed open. Kady manages to knock out the battle magician and they run out of there. Quentin tries to get Eliot out of there but Penny reminds him that real Eliot is safe in Fillory. Unbeknownst to them, real Eliot starts seizing and Fen (Brittany Curran) can’t get him to wake up. Outside the bank, another invisible goblin has found Julia and starts choking her against the wall when the rest of the team gets there. Kady uses the electric whip she took from the battle magician to kill it but it throws Julia to the ground where she faints. She comes to on a table in the butcher’s shop with Kady standing over her. Kady tells her that the women were able to get the demon baby out of her but that there was a complication during the procedure.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
• RIP Haxy. You were too good and too gentle for this cruel world.
• Line of the Night goes to Niffin Alice for the delivery of, “Oh my god, yes” at the suggestion of a bank heist and perfectly summing up my exact reaction to the plan.
• Not to be THAT person, but why didn’t Penny just sit on the table where the gold was to avoid touching the floor?

So what did you think? Is Eliot dying as the golem going to affect him in real life? What will Reynard do when he finds out Julia was able to abort his demon child? What is the “complication” Kady is referring to? Let us know your theories in the comments below!
