Last week’s Legacies got on my nerves for ruining the lead character of the show, and it seems this week’s installment, “Do All Malivore Monsters Provide This Level of Emotional Insight?” isn’t learning from that mistake.
The world’s cutest monster arrives and Hope and Lizzie’s anger issues heat up when they try to capture it. Alaric heads to high school to check in on Josie, when a crisis occurs.
Research Trip | With Landon (Aria Shahghsemi) back, Alaric (Matthew Davis) tasks the remaining students with summoning another Malivore monster and keeping it alive so they can find out why they’re coming. Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) naturally wants to do this without Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), since she actually tried to kill her and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) last episode, which by the way, Hope doesn’t even feel guilty about and has no idea why Lizzie is angry at her!
Lizzie tries to get Cleo (Omono Okijie) to summon a monster, but Hope catches them and they argue over what monster to summon, when a little pink Pikachu looking creature arrives out of nowhere! After fawning over how cute it is, the team chases after it after it burrows into the vents and once again, Lizzie and Hope clash while trying to catch it.
Paranoia | Alaric heads off to Mystic Falls High, partly to ask Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) to find out more about the wish granting apparatus he and Hope found, and partly to spy on Josie and MG (Quincy Fouse), who has also enrolled. During gym, where Alaric is substituting, Ethan (Leo Howard) gets into a fight with the jock who took his slot as quarterback, and when he storms off, he almost gets hit by a truck, when MG uses super speed to save him, inviting lots of questions from Ethan. Alaric orders MG to compel Ethan to forget, but it turns out that Ethan has had vervain on orders from his mother. After it leaves his system, MG bonds with Ethan and secretly doesn’t compel him.
R E S P E C T | Back at the school, Kaleb (Chris Lee) finds the critter’s molted skin, causing Landon to believe that the monster is a gremlin and it is feeding off the animosity between Hope and Lizzie. Even worse, it captures Cleo and heads off campus with her in tow. Lizzie, Hope and Kaleb find her tied up in a well, when the gremlin, who is now an ugly monster, shows up. And to make matters worse, Landon figures out that respect for one another is what makes the gremlin weaker.
Fortunately, Lizzie and Hope manage to compliment each other enough to weaken the gremlin enough for Hope to step on it. Afterwards, Landon tells Hope that maybe, just maybe, obsessing over his safety isn’t the best way to go! This finally talks some sense into her and she bonds with Lizzie, as well as Josie and Alaric having a heart to heart when he walks her back to Elena and Damon’s house, where she’s staying. After this, Dorian reveals that the wish granting artifact was found in photographs on the bookshelves of Napoleon and Rasputin, which can’t be good…
