“Legacies” Season Premiere Recap: Wake Up, Hope!

Thanks to COVID-19, “Legacies” had to cut its second season short with a few episodes left filmed and ready to go. But now, the series returns with the follow up to last season’s cliffhanger in “We’re Not Worthy.” As Alaric organizes a field day for the students to distract them from recent events, Rafael must find a way to save both Hope and Landon, while Lizzie attempts to fix the school’s animosity towards Josie.

Let the Games Begin | Alaric (Matthew Davis) calls a school assembly to send the students on a field day of games and fun, even though most of the school, namely Alyssa (Olivia Liang), is still mad at Josie (Kaylee Bryant) for her Dark Josie reign of terror. Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) has a 17 step plan to turn opinions in Josie’s favor, but Alyssa quickly derails that by challenging the twins to a tug of war.

Meanwhile, Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) and Alaric are trying to figure out why Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) are still unconscious, when the answer to their problems literally turns up on their doorstep: The Necromancer (Ben Geurens) arrives holding Landon’s spirit, which only he and Rafael can see, and wants to put Landon back in his body to get his hands on Dark Josie’s black magic- but Landon doesn’t want to go back in his body.

The Challenge of the Sword | Meanwhile, another Malivore monster arrives and her name is Nimwe, the guardian of Excalibur, which for some reason is hanging in Alaric’s office. After Alyssa drags Josie into the mud during tug of war, Josie confesses to Lizzie that she surrendered her magic, only for the mud she’s covered in to mysteriously fall off of her, which Josie denies was her doing.

Then, Nimwe arrives with Excalibur asking for the students’ help to defend the sword from a Green Knight that is coming to use it to bring about the Dark Ages. No pressure, right? But of course, the sword affixes itself into a rock and only someone worthy can lift it.

Hero Moves | Landon tells Rafael that he won’t go back into his body so that the Necromancer can’t get to the black magic and is prepared to sacrifice himself for that cause. Rafael won’t accept that and asks the Necromancer to put Landon’s spirit into Rafael’s body instead of Landon’s. Back with Excalibur, no one is worthy to lift it, not even Josie, until Rafael shows up, after having convinced Landon to return to his body to be with Hope.

Raf manages to lift the sword and slay the Knight, meaning that he’s a descendant of King Arthur! Nimwe dissolves into water after asking Raf to take care of the sword, while Landon, back in his body, kisses Hope, waking her up. Lizzie and Alaric convince Josie to go off and take some time with Caroline to heal, while Alyssa and Chad (Charles Jazz Terrier), finally freed from the Necromancer’s control, are about to leave Mystic Falls, when Chad suddenly dies in bloody fashion. Alyssa confronts the Necromancer, demanding to know if she’ll share the same fate, and he promises to spare her- but only if she swears loyalty to him.

“Legacies” airs Thursdays on The CW.
