“Legacies” Recap: Little Red Riding Hope

After last week’s dramatic episode, “Legacies” goes extra trippy for its latest, “Facing Darkness Is Kind of My Thing.” Hope enters Josie’s subconscious to free her from Dark Josie’s grasp, while Rafael must face the consequences of what he’s done. Lizzie faces some harsh realities about her life at the school, while the Necromancer offers Alaric a tempting deal.

Planning My Own Funeral | Hope ends up in Josie’s subconscious, which is a fairy tale land in which Hope is dressed in a red cloak, a talking pig man is harassing her and a wolf is trying to kill them both. Hope finds a sleeping Josie in the woods, but Pig Man tells her that a dark force is keeping her asleep.

Back at the school, Alaric and company are planning a fake funeral for Lizzie to keep up the appearance that she is dead. Lizzie, in true Lizzie fashion, magically disguises herself as Hope to literally plan her own funeral with no one the wiser- and Danielle Rose Russell crushes it as Lizzie in Hope’s body.

That’ll Do, Pig | Rafael reveals to Alaric that he killed Landon last night and Landon still hasn’t resurrected. He tries to get Alaric to kill him, but the Necromancer takes over Rafael’s body and knocks Alaric out. Back in fairy tale land, the wolf attacks Hope and Pig Man and devours the latter, but Hope slices the wolf’s stomach open and Josie comes out. Turns out Josie was the Pig Man, which makes Pig Man’s sexist and googling over Hope a little creepy in retrospect. No matter, Dark Josie has figured out that Hope is in her mind and goes into fairy tale land to kill them.

A Deal with the Devil | Alaric wakes up in a bar with the Necromancer controlling Rafael, Chad and Alyssa. He offers to free them and bring back Good Josie and Landon if Alaric helps him siphon the black magic in Josie into him, even agreeing to Alaric killing him if he doesn’t deliver. Back at the school, Lizzie as Hope tries to say nice things about herself during her eulogy, but the student body laughs at her. Pretty harsh! MG manages to save the situation and win over Lizzie by calling out the school for not letting Lizzie change her ways and only remembering her as a bully.

Hope gives Josie some words of encouragement that she can change the narrative in her own mind, before Dark Josie uses her magic to turn Hope to stone. It’s now Josie vs Josie and Good Josie wins out by changing the rules in the fairy tale land and stabbing Dark Josie with an axe. In the real world, Lizzie siphons the black magic out of Josie and into the Necromancer, who honors his deal and frees Alyssa and Rafael from his control. Lizzie cozies up to MG and tells the school that she’s still alive and they’re now happy to see her. Josie places her ability to siphon magic into a coin and locks it in her piggy bank for now, but the gang has bigger fish to fry: Landon is still dead and Hope hasn’t woken up yet. To add insult to injury, COVID-19 has delayed the rest of the season indefinitely.

Legacies airs Thursdays at 9pm on The CW.
