“Legacies” Recap: Things Get Dark. Like, Film Noir Dark

It’s been a rough day thanks to the fallout of COVID-19’s rapid spread. Good old TV is here to comfort us in this week’s “Legacies,” “There’s A Place Where the Lost Things Go.” JK! This episode was dark as hell, mostly due to the black and white look, but also due to the dramatic return of Dark Josie.

Emma tries to help the students by placing them in a magical simulation designed to root out their anxieties, but things take a starting turn when murders begin. Josie deals with her attraction to Jade, while a surprising face returns.

Supernatural Noir | After waking up from a dream of her kissing Jade- or was it real?- she, Lizzie, Hope, Rafael, MG and Jade all report to Emma for a magical therapy session inside a magical simulation in which everyone will have to find a secret escape word to realize their true selves and leave.

The gang wakes up in a 1940s film noir setting, which looks straight outta “Double Indemnity,” as a mysterious killer immediately kills Emma, forcing her out of the simulation. To add to the confusion, Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) returns inside the black and white world.

On the Case | MG takes on the role of noir detective and tries to find who killed Emma, while Lizzie is a movie star with Josie as her publicist and Hope is the world’s youngest bartender. Vardemus finds his escape word and ends up falling out of a locker in the school’s gym, having been stuffed there by Clark with his mind trapped in the simulation.

Back in there, Jade ends up poisoned while having dinner with Josie, forcing Jade into the real world, and MG interrogates Josie, only for Josie to get shot by someone in black.

Whodunnit? | Lizzie ends up finding her escape word, but she doesn’t wake up and MG gets shot and wakes up. Lizzie is chased into an alley by none other than Dark Josie, who plots to trap Lizzie in the simulation until the Merge. Fortunately, Hope arrives and shoots Dark Josie and wakes her and Lizzie up, while Rafael wakes up after seeing the Necromancer in a set of photos he took.

When Josie doesn’t wake up from the simulation, Alaric has her locked up until Dark Josie wakes up, having taken control of Josie’s body. She knocks out Hope before setting the school on fire and walking out the front door.

“Legacies” airs Thursdays on The CW.
