“Legacies” Recap: Enter Dark Josie

After last week’s showstopper of an episode, how does “Legacies” resolve the return of Kai Parker? In an upsettingly disappointing fashion in “You Can’t Save Them All.” Sadly, this week’s episode feels like a letdown, “Matrix” trilogy conclusion in more ways than one.

As Hope tries to find a way to bring back the Saltzmans who are trapped in the prison world, Kai makes his way to Mystic Falls and sets a plan into motion. Alaric must deal with the dying Lizzie as well as a black magic infused Josie.

I Fixed Her | Picking up where we left off, Alaric is about to be killed by Jade, when the black magic infected Josie, who looks like she just got back from a My Chemical Romance concert, uses a spell to turn Jade’s humanity back on and knock her out. Dark Josie then leads Alaric to find Lizzie with a piece of metal in her chest and they take her to a hospital, where the now remorseful Jade returns and helps Alaric stitch her up and save her from becoming a vampire. Realizing that someone is missing from their collective memories, Dark Josie casts the spell that brings back Malivore memories and the group realizes that Kai is on the loose.

The Trojan Heretic | Speaking of, Kai arrives at the school and offers to help Hope and Landon fix the Ascendant, which somehow sets off no red flags to Hope, who’s been screwed over more times than I can count. Hope astral projects to the prison world, where Alaric warns her of Kai’s treachery, just in time in fact, as Kai has compelled Dorian to bring Landon to the woods where Chad tries to shoot Landon with the golden arrow. Hope has a very “Matrix”-esque fight with Kai and locks him to a post, but he informs her that she must choose between saving Landon and stopping Alyssa from destroying the Ascendant and killing all trapped inside.

Hope’s Impossible Choice | Dark Josie has a spell that will get everyone out of the prison world save for one person, who must stay bending and anchor the spell. Jade convinces Wendy and Diego to give up their vendetta against Alaric so they can escape, but Alaric volunteers to stay behind so everyone else can leave. As everyone prepares to escape, Hope convinces Alyssa to not destroy the Ascendant as Jade, Wendy and Lizzie arrive in the real world. Diego, however, tries to kill Alaric, but Sebastian arrives and saves him, sending him back to the school, as he stays behind to anchor the spell so Dark Josie can escape, and suddenly, she’s not Dark Josie anymore, she’s regular Josie! How does that make sense?

Back with Landon in the woods, Dorian takes the golden arrow in the back to save Landon and Chad hightails it, as Landon grows fiery phoenix wings that fly him out of the woods. Dorian is rushed to the hospital, while MG and Kaleb, in an almost completely unnecessary subplot, find Rafael locked in a trailer in the woods, who remembers nothing about how he got there. Lizzie astral projects to the prison world to say goodbye to Sebastian as the world falls apart around him before it dies completely, killing him. Josie locks Alyssa, Wendy and Jade in the shack at the edge of the school, but not before Jade and Josie exchange some flirting. Do I smell a future ship? Alaric finally decapitates Kai in revenge for Jo, but all is not quite yet well, as Dark Josie seems to be making a resurgence…

“Legacies” returns Thursday, March 12 on The CW.
