In an incredibly unusual and convoluted detour of an episode, “Legacies” gives us “This Is Why We Don’t Entrust Plans to Muppet Babies,” which gives us surprising backstories to two minor characters in a strange fashion.
Emma returns to the school to celebrate Coven Day, which goes awry when a monster amplifies the hatred among the school’s students. Lizzie and Josie hatch a plan to rid themselves of black magic, while Hope’s new roommate takes her revenge.
Happy Coven Day | As this weird episode opens, we see the backstory of Alyssa Chang, a character we’ve literally known for one episode, as we find out that her magical powers may have burned down her parents’ home. Alaric and Emma took her into the school, but as her anger continued to lash out at the students, Emma magically wiped her memories of the fire in order to prevent Alaric from expelling her.

I Believe | In present day, the monster of the week is infecting the students, Alyssa and Hope included, by making them angry at each other. For some reason, nerdy student Wade can see the monster, but no one else can. Wade tells Landon that this is because he’s a fairy- of course!
But when the monster gains enough hateful energy to steal the black magic hourglass from Josie, Wade proves everyone right by sprouting fairy wings and using fairy dust to kill the monster. And, on a totally random note, how did Alaric not notice this when Wade was accepted into the school?
Twenty Minutes Left! | With the storyline completely resolved with twenty minutes left in the episode, time for a very strange, yet promising detour. Lizzie and Josie ask Alaric to make a second Ascendant to banish the hourglass to in order to keep it from causing harm to Josie. The witches gather to create a new Ascendant and send the hourglass there, which they do, but afterwards, Alaric, Josie and Lizzie suddenly vanish.
Turns out it was Alyssa since she remembered Emma’s erasing her memory after Josie’s memory spell and sent the Saltzmans there via the Ascendant as revenge. She also knocks out Emma and erases her memory of what she’s done, ensuring that no one will save the family, but Hope immediately knows what’s up and confronts Alyssa. In the Ascendant plane, Alaric and the twins wake up- along with Sebastian.
